DA 50 carb problem

So I just mounted my new DA 50 and the dammed screw on the carb throttle arm stripped out and broke off inside! Dammit I swear the worse luck possible. Now I have to wait until next week sometime. Has this ever happened to anyone before? I only took the dammed thing off to tap it for a 4-40 screw to use a ball link. Of course when I put it on the wierd angle it was at probably contributed to it.

Was a first for me!

Any solutions that might get me flying this week short of buying another motor or carb would rock. I am thinking if I take the carb off I might be able to take off the throttle butterfly and then get a new arm and screw on there. Just not sure if DA does anything custom to their carb butterfly arm.

I am probably the rare soul who has had the honor to break it also.

Gary Owen! Dude, don't you hate it when that stuff happens? It's usually me who either drops the 2.00905 mm. X 3.09857 mm. left handed counter sunk blind self tapping bolt through the one crack in the floor OR need to take back an anvil cause I was in a hurry and didn't mount it right and broke it. Feel your pain! Wish I had some words of advice. Look at the bright side! At least you ain't a leg! Keep grinnin', Biff

Any machine shop should be able to easy out or get it out. Worst case, send it back to DA and let them put in a new shaft.

Yeah I wouldnt send the whole motor back to DA as it just came from them! I would just take the carb of. If they could give me the parts I could do it myself. I am much more into rebuilding engines now as I think its more relaxing then working on planes!

Yeah it could be worse, I could have a black beret. Oh well thats when you get down with OPP. Other People's Planes.

Re: DA 50 carb problem

I too had the throttle bolt break off at the head. I had attempted to snug the bolt up after I found the throttle arm loose on the carb. I know the bolt is red thread locked in there so there was no getting it out. I decided to drill it out, re-tap the hole, and use a new bolt. What I determined while drilling out the left over bolt is that it was made from aluminum and it drilled easily. A new bolt was used and the entire assembly was thread locked to prevent any further issues.

I ordered, and am waiting for, a new throttle shaft for the motor but I decided to repair the one in the carb already. This was based on the bolt attaching the butterfly to the shaft being "Pinged" at the extruding end. This pinging prevents the bolt from backing out and being sucked up by the motor, a catastrophic failure.
