Re: CNC Foam printer..

They say with the right cutting bit you might be able to cut balsa.. There are a lot
of applications besides foamies. For example you could use it to create cowl plugs
by cutting foam parts and building them up using inch thick foam..

Demo videos look insanly good. i did a lot of foamy design and the hardest part is turning the Sketchup files into cut foam. Maybe with the right bit we can cut control horns in aircraft ply.

I think I'm going to build one!

Re: CNC Foam printer..

I listen to the guy who is behind this thing in a POD cast on http://www.allthingsthatfly.com/
And I believe he mentioned that you can cut material 1 3/4 inch deep. I don't see you you couldn't
do 3mm depron..

Re: CNC Foam printer..

Hey guys. Mark and Trish Carew here, inventors of The Phlatprinter. We're really happy you guys are interested in building your own Phlatprinter. To answer your question regarding 3mm depron, yes The Phlatprinter cuts 3mm, no problem.

We are planning on releasing The Phlatprinter on August 22 so we are in crunch time! We have made quite a few improvements during the last month of tweaking the machine before sending it out. It's working better than ever and we are stoked!

Cool! This actually CUTS the depron? Thats sweet! Does it work with any kind of cad? I'm going to be using Rhino or just AutoCad.

We might build one

Re: CNC Foam printer..

I am a little disappointed that the people doing this are going to sell the plans. It would have been nice to see this as an open effort with creative commons licensed plans and information.

I do understand wanting to recoup the cost of developing the thing and the cost of printing and mailing the plans. Usually when plans of this type are made available the electronic version is available for free but is pretty useless if its not printed. Printed plans are available at cost.

Still for $40 for plans I could see myself doing this over the winter.

Re: CNC Foam printer..

Lowkey3D, thanks for the warm welcome. We are happy to be here.

Wild Thang, yes, as long as you can export from your CAD progarm to DXF or DWG you should be fine. You import it into Sketchup, lay it out on the Phatprinter template, to create the g-code.

If anyone is interested, we were interviewed on www.allthingsthatfly.com We sound goofy but it might answer some of your questions. We are on episode #58.

Also, Michael Hancock at www.rcflightcast.com speaks of us often. He is really exited about The Phlatprinter and he has a good idea of what we have going on.

Thanks everyone for your interest and warm welcome
