Heads up
Anyone running a BCMA ignition ?
Customer sent me a G62 with the BCMA ignition conversion.. Said it was running fine and developed a loud knock.. The ignition uses a new hub with a separate single bolt hub bolted in to the end with six 4mm flathead allens...Two were completely gone, three were broken off but still in the hub, only ONE was holding the center part onto the hub...The center hub was very close to coming off... If you have one of these check out the six 4mm flatheads... Best thing to do would be to replace all six with 5mm flatheads.... Inspection revealed the threaded holes in the hub were not exactly spaced, .025 difference from best to worst..The countersunk holes in the center hub were about the same..When one or two of the six were bottomed out in the tapered holes the other 4 were being pressed sideways..One broke, than another, finally 5.... |

Ralph always had/has good information. He and a few others posted more good data to help others, will be missed for sure when the day comes they cannot for whatever reason post anymore. It will be the day I quit even reading forums. Most all the guys who post in forums these days, just post for the sake of running their jaws off. Getting pretty sad on FG anymore. I miss the good old days.

Ralph,
I picked up this G62 that came from an estate sale, is this one of your earlier convetsions? If not do you recognize this type of conversion? Russ |

I think those conversion were sold to dealers by Tommy (MT engines) they put private labels on RCexl ignitions. that was back when RCexl was looking for customers and would put private labels on small orders but now they only will do it for there big customers. I also sold a few of the conversions Some of the first engines I got from Tommy had BCMA labels on the ignitions, Still have a couple of the ignitions here some where and a couple of the prop hubs for the conversion. Thank you Ralph, that helps me understand it better. Now I have to figure cutting the linkage right on the c&h front assembly after changing to a thinner carb mount with out messing up the advance timing. Mounting this into a yellow p47 and that carb sticks to far out. So assuming since ot your ignition use a 4.8 nicad?

Yes..
Turn it on, rotate the crank slowly counter clockwise..Draw a pencil line across the hub and white nylon part at the exact point when it sparks...Make another pencil mark 3/8" clockwise from the first on the hub...put the piston on TDC.. The mark on the white nylon part should line up with the second mark on the hub....This will be 28 degrees BTDC..Adjust the link to set it.... |
