Can you use avgas to eliminate gasoline smell?

Thanks for the help so far.

An issue with going to gas is the smell in my bedroom/RC shop (and thus the whole house).
I heard using avgas stops the smell. Is that true? Is there anything I should know about using avgas?

Thank you.

You will need to retard your timing . I tried LL AV in my 170 . No smell or mess but the performance was off bigtime. I didn't put a tach on it but I bet it was 15% or more drop due to the higher octane . I tried about a gallon and gave up. I was trying to avoid the ethanol .

By eliminating the gas smell you introduce something waaaay more dangerous into your bedroom: lead. This stuff is really bad for you. I would not do it.

if you are running avgas (leaded) in your aircraft and running the engine in your bedroom you MIGHT get a slight exposure.... you get waaaaaayyyyyyy more lead exposure just by handling those lead weights with the sticky back that we use to balance our aircraft. or leaded weight fishing lure or wheel weights.....jusy sayin

I keep three 50cc airplanes in my family room. Gas smell is not an issue. I drain the tanks and run the fuel out when I'm done flying. 93 octane premium.

All of my gassers are stored in my workshop very near the family room. Trust me, if there was an odor problem, my wife would be the first to inform me of same!!! As Jetpainter suggested, drain the tanks so that no liquid gas residue can escape and you'll be good to go using regular pump gas. I don't even run them dry.

About the only time I have gas odor in the house is when I work on a carb, tank or other fuel system parts.

I wondered about that. When I get gas on my hands, even though I wipe if off, my hand smells the rest of the day or until I do a good scrub with soap. You don't get a residual gas smell even though you drain the tanks?

It's never been a problem. Like Truckracer said, the only time I smell any gas is when I work on the tank, lines, or carb. And if it's drained and run dry even that isn't that bad.

I am sitting on my living room couch in my apartment with two gas planes maybe 5 feet away. I don't smell anything.

Yep. Works great! Works in smoke oil too. They even make one called Reefer Madness that is a natural fit for smoke oil

Those scents are great fun
I've used quite a few of the different ones. Some guys believed I was experimenting with "Fruit extract" oils (Sometimes you just can't help stringing dumbasses along) , Another time, I used the Reefer Madness and asked a couple of the FOG's if they knew who was smoking pot at the field - they went off on a witch hunt (Whch we all thought was great because they stayed out of the air and flying circles because they weren't gonna fly with a stoner - whoever it was) That day, a few of us used my fuel and it was funny as ****

But to answer the question - yep, they do work but don't be tempted to overdose them because they don't work too well then..

I bring planes into the house as well. I simply drain the tank and plug the vent line at the end of the day. No gasoline smell and since I've been using Viton clunk lines I've never had a problem with the clunk line drying out or getting stiff, even using regular pump gas with ethanol..

Yes, in my case when I first bring a plane inside, I might smell a trace of gas but as soon as I wash my hands and stop handling the planes, it goes away. I might mention my wife again. I can crack the lid on a can of acetone or other solvent, open some strong smelling glue, etc. and 2 floors away, the wife will smell it within minutes. But never a complaint about gas smell.
