High speed roll

Hi folks,

I would like to know when Joe or Gabriel doing the high speed rolling, did they use only the elevator or also with the rudder control?

I tried couple times in the past few months and can't seem to get a perfect roll with just the elevator control at high speed, not to mention changing direction like Gabriel passing his famous Altuz gap at 2011 Joe Nall.

Appreciate for your input.

Jack

Hi Jack. Both elevator and rudder are used. Very small inputs, but they are both used. Check Gaby out in this video at 5:25...

Always use both rudder and elevator. Very, very small inputs at high speed.

If you watch BoneDoc's 3D clinic "The Pop Top" video he does some fast rolls and you can see the inputs he uses in the radio overlay. I love that overlay he does on his clinics.

Use both Rudder and Elevator. Also make sure you seal your hinge gaps. This helps to have better control authority and a way faster roll rate.

I was driving my Jeep with no tops and no doors on it at Nall this year when Gaby did those rollers about 20' over the top of me. That was awesome!

Awesome, thank you all for the input!

good thing I asked otherwise I just keep practicing at the wrong direction!
I think what I need to do is more expo when doing fast rolling to give it that tiny little input.

Make sure you have your elevator and rudder on low rates. Otherwise it will be tough to keep smooth.

faster speed doesn't always mean faster roll

Just want to share that with gasser, if you try to go full throttle at high speed roll, the rolling speed is significant slower than mid-speed roll, no matter which direction you roll, not sure about electric though.

I think you are experiencing blowback from the aileron servos.

I have noticed that what you said is true ON SOME airplanes, but in a high-alpha setting. Not at high speeds.

Yeah, that really shouldn't present itself as an issue. Torque from the engine/prop should be a very low factor compared to the torque imparted by the ailerons/wing. With good torque and proper setup, I don't notice any difference in roll-rate between right and left at higher speeds. Even at low speeds and high-alpha, I rarely notice this.
