Doesn't look too bad, kinda similar to a scaled down Krill Spark... Could be a good next plane for my girlfriend.

Hahah yeah she is. She has only had about 20 flights on her trainer and she is looping and rolling all over the place. Soon to attempt her first take off. Is there a place where I can one purchase one these is Australia?

My Rainbow
Hi guys
Thought I will share my experiences with this model. Seeing it on the net I could not resist and had to order it. Once the kit arrived I had a close look at it and one thing stands out: SOMEBODY THAT KNOWS HIS STUFF DESIGNED THAT MODEL! There is many details in construction that show there has been put a lot of thought into designing it. A little detail: The openings in the fuselage for the pull-pull cables for the rudder are exactly at the right spot! There is even little notches in the frame before it where the cables run thru. Never seen it so well before! I am kind of a special guy and always have to put my very own "stamp" onto every model I build. The building is finished so far. My aim is always to build as light as possible. Well, my Rainbow should get airborne at about 2150grams :-) Here are some pictures of my Rainbow and how I built it and modified some things. I will be glad to post more and will let you know soon about the flying characteristics of the plane. Maiden is planed next weekend |

Looks good, what setup did you go with? Looking forward to the flight report.

Maidenflight
Well guys, the maiden flight was done this morning
Unfortunately I had some issues from my side and did only 2 short flights. It was more to prove that my setup holds up. It kind of did, but I am not totally satisfied. The power is not enough to fly a F3A program. I am currently not at the absolute limit and have some room, but not much! I can still say some things about the flying characteristics of this model: With the low weight I was flying it the wing loading is of course in a extremely good range. The Rainbow flies really slow and gives you a "much bigger airplane" feel. I think even with 100-200gr more weight this will still be the case. The throws I set up are quite low yet the model is very responsive. Specially the Elevator! I reduced them on the field and that improved the smoothness of flight. Even with reduced throws on ailerons and elevator snaps are a joy! That thing does spins very quickly and as you release the stick it stops almost with a bang! Full marks there!! Knife edge flight requires only little rudder input which is what I expected given the modern F3A design with the huge side area of the fuselage. Unfortunately the wind started to pick up which made proper judgement impossible. But I can say CG and motor thrust line are not yet where they belong. Will go flying again tomorrow and sort these out. Once that is ok I will start doing some more F3A maneuvers. I will keep you up to date! So far I can say: A mini F3A airplane with potential! WOW!!
Hello F3A friends
Did 3 more flights today. The weather was much better and I could finally "feel" the Rainbow! First, let me tell you what I did: - I increased the motor timing to get more power - I used another (smaller...yes...smaller!) more powerful batterie - I took the CG about 5mm back (I am now in the middle of the CG range of the manual With this changes I went for another flight. The power is now almost enough, but still on the lower side. But wow what a difference power makes. Still need some more though! Will change to a 14x9 to try. My takeoff weight is now an incredible 2128gr!!! I achieved this with a 2650mAh 4S batterie. Flying time should be around 5 minutes. (Some will say not enough...to me it is!) Gents, this is a real F3A plane! It goes like on rails! The throws are still a bit too high. Next thing I will do is to program dual rate. I think I will need the bigger ones for snaps since these are not as crisp anymore as in the beginning. Knife edge flight as I already said needs very little rudder. Today the air was still, allowing me to see what the model does. And it does....almost nothing!! There is a slight tendency to roll inverted. But almost negligible. No other mixers needed! The test showed still a little nose heavy and the thrust line too much to the right. Now I will correct these things and maybe next time the knife edge needs no more mixing!? I have to say I really enjoyed flying the rainbow and the performance is way beyond of what one would expect for a model that size! It is very neutral, does everything you want and makes you feel good! The only disadvantage I can see is the sensitivity to wind, which is obvious with that weight!? If some considers buying that model all I can say is: GO FOR IT!!! By the way, I have been asked to give my permission for my color scheme. So maybe the new Rainbows will appear similar to mine!?! Thanks Martin for sharing your building and maiden for this kit. Enjoy your flying!
We also have a very good news that we got the world wide exclusive permission from F3A world champion Christophe Paysant-Le Lurox to manufacture and sell his W/C airplane model AXIOME in 70 size class (EP/GP), and distribute all over the world. Now Christophe is design the AXIOME 70, news will be updated soon. |
