Watsup with a nylon in a metal gear servo?

Hi guys !

Like the title says , wats up a nylon / karbonite gear doing in an
Advertise metal/ titanium gear servo?

I thought that would be the weakest link? Or the gear is there where their is no load?

Seems odd though , maybe someone in the know could shed some light ?

Thanks alot folks

Most likely it's a gear that has no load applied to it, so it shouldn't effect the durability of the servo.

it is common for the first gear to be nylon... very light load on it and it is designed as the weak link.. AFAIK....

On or two nylon gears would absorb some shock load from the metal gears. The nylon gear(s) help protect the metal gears.

The first gear moves several revolutions for each revolution of the next one. The force on the teeth is small. If you count the teeth you get the ratio of force in each step down of rotation speed in exchange for torque.

The gear on the servo's motor has very low torque applied even in a 300+ in-oz servo. This gear is always metal because of being press-fit to the motor. A nylon gear at this location would eventually split from age.

Ta Da surprise..

Almost every so called metal gear servo has a nylon or some kind of plastic gear that comes right off the main pinion. I think the reason is to give it a (mechanical fuse) type of situation to so that a damage will be mimmized in a sudden stoppage event.

Hitec, Jr, Futaba they all do it.

Ive blown a couple first nylon gears. One in an 8th scale buggy, another in a plane. Now I use Align/Savox TG series servos in all big planes and helis. They are true full metal gears and are bulletproof. On a heli when wrecked the case would blow apart before the gears. No chance of this in a plane AND the servos are $75 for 170oz in.,or $90 for 277 oz!
