I was about 20 feet away from the impact point and I can say that it was scary..you don't know where to run and it came down plenty fast for me.

You guys are hung up on the numbers. The airplane was CAPABLE of 250 mph, it was not flying 250 mph when it crashed.

It was going plenty fast when he was doing circuts. When the battery packs shifted it shot upwards and lost a lot of it's speed before it came down. Very, very lucky no one got hurt!!

The designer of the plane was the one who was flying it when it crashed. For the life of me I can't remember his name.

Guys
The plane was supposed to fly at 250mph but it was probably going 100mph before something terribly wrong happened. Anyways, just wanted to post the crash for fun viewing. Glad no one was hurt. |

Ok guys here are the "closest" facts to date on the Stiletto that went in.
It was a PBM model by Tom Keating. The race version with alky motors can do 240 mph in a dive or more like 210-220 on a level. Tom has won the Unlimited series in the USRA and is one of the best pilots on the circuit- hands down. The E version Mark had built was probably only able to do around 170- 190 MPH. These planes are incredibly built and when that Battery pack let loose all that weight went to the aft and it was all over instantly. How fornuate no one was hurt. Just prooves how dangerous our sport "can" be and how safety precautions need to always be in place. I cant tell ya how glad I was to hear the announcer over the PA telling everyone to "watch out". |
