Question
Extra 78" engine dilemma

I have the EF extra 300 78" airplane with os33gt on it. I think it's a little bit lazy because the engine is too small for this airplane.
I think about upgrade for my airplane. Help me to decide:
1. DA35
2. DLE40
3. VVRC40

Please help me to decide....

The DA35 on a pipe is what I'm using, the strongest possible setup on your list, and plane is OK but imo underpowered. I'm getting 4.25 hp. 7260 rpm with 20x11 Falcon cf, Planebender smooth pipe. Crazy quiet. Real floater of a plane.

If I had it to do again I'd put a DA60 on it. My understanding is that the latest EF78 300s can handle it. Older ones maybe.

I had o.s. 33 on mine. Took a long time to breakin and make any power. How much time on your motor? What prop? It's a big airplane with alot of drag for its size. But I was happy with it. Find a used DA 50 if you want to get noticeable power increase. These other motors ain't much more powerful. Or if your motor has alot of Time on it, get a bowman ring and that will get your power back

You really think that 50cc on this airplane will fit?
Isn't that too much for this airframe?

It would fit but be allot of power. But I don't know what kind of power increase you were after. I had a vvrc on another plane and it was a great motor but twins are less forgiving on tunes and temps then singles. I guess the question is what are you really looking for? Please give more details about your setup now and why you think it needs updated

I hadn't used a eme 35 but my 55 and 60 were perfect awesome motors. A pitts muffler would be fine if you get one that's not baffled.

I had the EME35/pitts muffler on my 78". Power was sufficient, but I would have preferred a little more. I think the DA35 on a pipe would have been the sweet spot. A DA50 would be a hot rod on this plane, but your wing loading would go up some. Colton Clark flew an EF 83" MXS with a DA50 and told me the increased wing loading was most evident on dead-stick approaches. Sinks pretty fast.

The pitts muffler that came with the 33 is very restrictive. Put a dle muffler on it and you will get some extra power and rpms. Maybe go up to a 20x6 also. That might be enough increase to please you. If not your not out much money. If the motor has alot of Time on it, get a bowman ring and get some compression back

The 78" Extra is a challenging one to correctly power. And remember the new V2 version is 6 oz heavier. I was thinking of using a EME35 with an OS gt33 pitts muffler, but I can see that will be marginal.

Sure the DA35 and pipe is a sweet setup but at that point I might as well go 500/60cc. I know the EME60 is a killer engine.

And with Planebender's pipe the 35 is quieter than many electrics... and don't forget that the gt33 muffler is quite heavy and also two of mine broke.
