I'm not sure there is an ideal gap but a range from .018" to .026" is common. .020" to .024" being most common. Many just use an xacto #11 blade for a gauge and most of these measure between .020" and .022" depending on when they were made.

I drilled it out no biggie. Ok, question. I was Looking through the Extreme Flight Yak 54 110 V2 thread and they are recommending 1.75" stand off for the DA 120 to achieve a one inch cowling to prop space. Before I go and buy a 2" standoff I wanted to verify that I need about a 1/4 more stand off for the GP123 to achieve the same distance.
Where can I find a scaled template to print out and stick on firewall for drilling? |

you can use a piece of 1/4" ply or washers for additional spacing, and I wouldn't get too hung up on making it exactly what is in the manual.
you can also easily make a mounting template from a piece of cardboard or scrap wood. put the standoffs on the engine, use a marker to put fresh ink on the bottom of the standoffs, and take a footprint of the mounting points. draw a crosshairs at the center of each bolt hole and use that to drill a starter hole. use a ruler to create center horizontal and vertical lines to align with the firewall. the mounting dimensions for the engines are also available on the web should you just decide to draw one out. a question that seems to come up is which line to use on the firewall...looking down with the nose facing away from you use the vertical line on the far left as that accounts for engine offset. |
