Re: Planning e-conversion for 33% extra

gdryer: Could you briefly explain why the 180kv motor takes a smaller prop than the 130kv and also would the zippy 6s 30c 5800mah batteries in a 12s1p config be a good choice for the Aeroworks 260 for basic and sportsman class? About how much flight time would you expect? I am concidering the 130kv setup for my 260. And how did you like your power from your Sukhoi compared to gas? Was the vertical unlimited? And one more. Why would you add pitch to a 27:10 and not diameter? Just courios, newbie question. Thanks a lot~!

JBM: How do you like your setup so far and did you ever try the Turnigy 200A ESC?
Thanks.
Jake

The higher KV motor turns more RPM per input volt so you can use a smaller pitch propeller to obtain the same speed of the aircraft. Ideally you want the motor to be able to turn the propeller at the rated speed without overstressing the motor. All of this of course is theoretical and you really do not know which propeller will be best until you test it. On the Hangar 9 Sukhoi the 27 inch diameter propeller was as large as I could go even with the 5" wheels. Even then I whacked the propeller on the grass a couple of times when I compressed the landing gear on landing.

For a 35% plane you are going to need at least 12S2p of 5000 mah batteries in order to comfortably run the Basic or Sportman routine. I know someone who is running the Hangar 8 35% Extra using 12S2P 5000s and he quoted numbers of 2800 mah per pack to run the 2010 IMAC Basic routine. Even a 5800 pack in a 1P configuration would not be sufficient.

Re: Planning e-conversion for 33% extra

Thanks a lot. Would you have gone higher on diameter if you could have or do you feel that you have the right prop? I have the 33% 260 and am trying to figure out the best setup for it. Also, which low cost speed controller would you recommend since I do not see the 120A at Hobby City anymore.
Thanks.

I was pretty happy with the setup as it was so I was not contemplating testing a different propeller. I forgot to mention that the battteries and ESC ar also part of the equation. I recommend testing trust and amp draw using differerent timing settings with the ESC. Also the choice of propeller may also be affected by how warm your components get.

I am not sure what is up with the 120A ESC. The same component can be purchased at EspritModel (Hobbywing Platimum 120) or at Hobbypartz.com (Exceed-RC Momentum 120) but the have been out of stock since August. You might try and contact these companies to see if this ESC will ever be stocked again.

I did use the Sentilon 100A ESC (from Hobby City) for a couple of contests and I did not blow it up! I don't recommend this if you are drawing more than 100A. There is also the new Turnigy Monster-2000. Looks like a bargain at $190.00 but I do not know anyone who has tested it.

Re: Planning e-conversion for 33% extra

The 120A esc isn't at HC with good reason as far as I can make out. Mine gave up for little reason, and others have too I was told, so they don't carry it any more.

I've flown my 33% AW extra on the 130kv motor, but after a getting used to it I decided its not enough really. I went up to a 28x12 to push the motor harder, but even that was only 'ok' for vertical.

I haven't flown the new 200a esc yet; I'm planning on pushing a fair bit more power by running the 180kv motor and a larger prop (maybe the same 28x12), so I need the amps! Having gained some more experience with the big electric setups I'm realising just how large the gap is between the peak power requirement and the general rate of energy usage.

My 27% hangar 9 extra runs masses of grunt at over 3500w from just 12s 3000mah, and yet you get near full throttle so little that a 7 or 8 minute flight uses only 2000 to 2500 mah from the packs.

Please let us know how the 180kv motor does with a big propeller. BTW I saw that HC IS carrying the 120A ESC as of today, dont know for how long though. The 200A might be a better choice for the 180kv.

Re: Planning e-conversion for 33% extra

I love it when you miss the really obvious...

I had a couple of hobbycity sourced 80-100 motors, a 130kv and a 180kv, plus another 130kv from a local source. I've mucked around with them a fair bit and got familiar with what breaks and what's good about them. I saw the new version 2 80-100 on HC with its revised bearings, better design etc etc and bought one to try. Until I actually offered it up to my plane I hadn't realised, the damn things about 15mm longer in the can - 77mm versus 62mm. Nearly a 25% increase in the important stuff that does the work! Nobody on HC seems to have mentioned it LOL...

I've actually brought a camera home for a change so I'll post some pictures later.

Sweet. I've got a Mejzlik 27:10 that might work nicely on the 180kv. I'm thinking I'm going to go with the Turnigy-2000 and give it a try. HC has the 80-100-180 for $99 bucks now but they are sold out.

How many amps do you think you will be pulling on the 180kv? Will it still stay within an acceptable temp range? And how is the power?

JBM...You really did not have enough power with the 28x12? How many amps and rpm did you have? I was thinking the 130kv with a 28x12 would have plenty of power. Are you trying to 3D it or IMAC style?
