Question
SERVO SPEEDS Affect on Flying Control?

I'm shopping for servos and noticed there are a lot of servos with speeds like .07-.08 sec 60 degrees are these too fast and what effect does it have in controlling your plane?
Thanks in advance for your opinions!
Brian

Years ago I upgraded the servos on a 50cc plane to super fast .07-.08 servos from the more common .15 servos. It just made the plane feel twitchy and I ended up increasing the expo on the radio to make it feel like it did with the slower servos. I would go with more strength than speed anytime as long as it was in the .15 range rather than super slow.

You can always tone them down with the radio or programing but you can never speed them up.
Think of it like this also, its only going to go as fast as you move the stick. so set the controls up with rates and expo and speed if you have to (not really my recommendation). If you have servos that are two slow then there is nothing you can do but open the wallet again.

yes they are more commonly used with heli guys that have gyros that can move them at super fast speeds.

Ok this brings back a recent experience with fast servos I tried in a 60cc plane. It looked really cool if i was in a straight line and wanted to roll VERY fast. Otherwise I was all over the place. I ended up using 90% expo. I get what Josh is saying but just be prepared.

What kind of expo is everyone using to keep there planes from being twichey? I just maidened my kangke waco last weekend, it flew nice a little twichey, I bumped the expo on the dx8 to 40 and it seemed better.

Expo depends on how much throw you are using and is really of a personal fee kind of thing.

I use high speed servos for throttle. If you are using an engine with fabulous low-end throttle response, like my DA's, then you can really appreciate the speed of high speed servos for the throttle.

There are only two things that I slow down the speed of a servo for:

(1) during flight condition change in my radio. The 14MZ does this well. This way, when I switch between conditions (like those that affect control surface deflection rate), I do not get any twitching in the air.

(2) the application of my speed brakes. Large control surfaces have a very large effect as speed brakes. I learned to slow them down after I applied them once on the ground and snapped a tail wheel bracket. Slowing down the servos during application of speed brakes is a bit gentler on the aitrfame and components.
