super simple, super light weight setup for gas planes

Hi Guys, i know i am about to start a big war, here.

Some people are elimination their ignition batterys and connecting straight to the rx packs to save weight. on 2.4 ghz rx this seems to be working great and the ignition units are also holding up fine if using A123 batteries. how about eliminating the kill switch as well and pluging the ignition straight into the rx for power? if you use a gear channle you can cut power by flicking the gear switch, which is really the same as having a kill switch!

This is how i was thinking you could set it up.
x2 A123 2400mah packs going to seperate switches, going into reciever (no regs, works great with 8911 servos). from receiver plug into a switch, and from the switch into the ignition box into gear channel and use gear switch for kill. nice and simple, nice and light!

I am aware that people are going to scream that rx will get interferance from ignition, etc. it does seem like it will work using a 2.4ghz rx. also others have been powering their ignitions with unregulated A123 with no probs what so ever!

Ok now blast me!!! but remember the weight saved!

I have used a powerbox gemini with 2 lipos to outputting to the rx and to the ignition via the gyro output and it worked great.

Your getting into pretty subjective water here so it would be interesting to hear if or why you couldn't do this based on something other than opinion.

ohh it works alright, it's just opinion that stops it from working! ha ha! i have tried wiring it up like that as an expiriment ( did not fly though, but did extensive range checks). it was all goody!

It does work great. I flew an extreme flight 74" yak with a brillelli 36cc running the ignition off my receiver Fromeco Iron Corp 2600 mah battery pack. I had the pack going to a kodiac switch. From the switch I had three standard plug leads comming off (2 to the reciver, 1 to the ignition). This way I could monitor both my flight pack and ignition mah usage. I did have an optical kill switch though. I know Bob Pasterolo on the other web-site (rc***niver**se) has posted some excellent results running no ignition pack for a 50cc gasser, while using an A123 pack to run everything.

I am planning on running my QQpython with smoke pump off my ignition pack (Fromeco Iron Corp 2600 mah, on a kodiac switch) to save from having to add a smoke pump battery.

Good thoughts...this is how the hobby progresses.

Mark

That's the way brover! light simple and effective! if you run the ignition through the rx you wont need the kill switch! save urself $50 bucks! i also ran a tme smoke pump off the rx! great smoking system!

Sometimes, most times simple is better. But then if we all did things this way. Who would they sell all those fancy gadgets too!

you got to set it up on the tx so that ignition always gets power but when you flick the swu=itch it cuts power to ignition. this is exactly what a kill switch does! and you set it up the same on the tx!

I thought anything plugged into the reciever was recieving power all the time and a flick of a switch only sent a signal on the white wire. Are you saying you can set up the transmitter to cut power from the gear switch.

The signal wire works by PWM(pulse width modulation) flipping the gear switch will not cut off a ignition plugged straight into the RX. If you use some kind of converter, like one from RAM or maybe TME, it could cut off power to a ignition.

Here we go. This will work on your gear channel. http://www.dimensionengineering.com/PicoSwitch.htm
