Piped 80cc on a QQ 102" Yak

People have commented on the good power of the big 80cc singles on a pipe. I've already received some positive feedback about this. So, has anyone actually installed a 80cc with a pipe on this 102" Yak? They claim the power is nearly the same as a 100cc on mufflers. If it really is true, then a piped 80cc should fly a 25 pound plane well, am I right?

I would like to hear from someone who has done it. Thanks!

Re: Piped 80cc on a QQ 102" Yak

Dick put together two of my planes with the ZDZ80 on a pipe. I am sure he will chime in.

One plane was a custom-built Extra 300 based on the Hangar 9 fuse (custom ultralight wing, stab, and rudder by Dick), and the other was a Wild Hare Giles 202. The Extra weighed just under 22# and the Giles is around 22# 9oz. They fly great, and the power is unbelievable.

Basically if you mount the engine with the cylinder at the 8 O'clock position you can run a straight header back into the can. The can is positioned in the fuse by cutting a couple of formers, and planking the whole thing with thin, light ply. Very simple to do, but intimidating if you think about it too much.

By way of comparison, my Dad had a hangar 9 Sukhoi with the DA-100 on mufflers. The DA spun the same prop (old Bambula 26x10) around 6900, while the ZDZ turned 6500 - 6600. This was at 4350 ft altitude.

The Sukhoi, of course, had better vertical acceleration (unlimited vertical penetration, at full speed). The Extra and Giles have great vertical power too (unlimited, but maybe 70% of straight-line speed). None of these planes should be flown at full power with the nose pointing anywhere but up!

The Sukhoi, however, weighed 26.5#. This is a distinct disadvantage. After the Sukhoi was shot down my Dad bought the QQ Yak 102" for his DA. It weighs about the same as the Sukhoi, but with the larger wing it is a night-and-day difference flying. The power is excessive for IMAC, and just about right for 3D (if you like).

The same plane with the piped zdz80 would float like a glider! Expect 1.5# - 2# savings in the engine setup alone. With a pipe and light engine, you will definitely need a pull-pull on the rudder and all equipment mounted forward.

The ZDZ responds very well to the cannister. I am sure the new DA-85 will love the pipe too...

Here are links with some pictures...

Cap http://pages.prodigy.net/ka9lnp/dhmhan9cap.htm

There are many good techniques shown in these pages, from a true master (but not the one quoted in my sig, btw).

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everybody!

I put the ZDZ 80RV-J in a QQ 102 " yak on 45mm stand offs, JMB T80 can on a PT 27 x 10 prop and this combo was perfect but you had to be very carefull at the tail end to get the correct C of G

Inicol, Can you tell us more about your plane? What is the weight? How does the 80 pull it? Does it 3-d well?

I can not say to much as I only flew the model a few times before someone made me an offer I could not refuse.

After all I am in business

I have more 102's on the sea at present and will be building another as soon as they arrive, I will then report back with more details including the mods I did to the fuz to fit an 80mm diameter can

The model had ample power to pull from prop hang with ease and the 3d performance was excelent due to the light weight, but what else would you expect from a QQ kit?

I am strongly considering this plane with the new DA - 85cc single. All the numbers just make it seem mouth watering. QQ's YAK's are the lightest of any 35% airframe I've seen, and the wing area is the largest, it is ballistic with a 100cc on it. Same plane , same power, @ 4lbs lighter, c'mon... It'll be insane at minimum.
