Re: Make Your Own Smoke Oil?
Have tried a few of the home brews suggested here. If i could I would recommend avoiding any smoke oil that contains diesel, for the following reasons.
(1) The oil will seep into any hole in your airframe weakening the structure eventually (so will some other brews, but diesel really soaks in). (2) Will stain some coverings. (3) Your trailer will stink like you wouldn't believe. As for putting it inside the vehicle you are travelling in (4) Does not apear to be all that effective, compared to super dri, but it certainly is cheap. Might try the baby oil mixture. While super dri works the best of the types I have tried, the last time I purchased a gallon for trials it cost me $44, including shipping, (see above thread) way to expensive to burn up in a couple of dozen flights. Now where can I find a baby, and how do you extract the oil |

Re: Make Your Own Smoke Oil?
Something else I have tried that is just about as good as genuine smoke oil is a product made by Caltex called Summer Spray Oil.
Don't know whether you can obtain it anywhere but Australia (I would think you can) but it works really well, with a long 'hang time'. Usual warnings about inhaling the product, but any smoke oil is not going to be good for you if you make a habit of standing in the plume. Have also insulated the header pipe, to retain the heat, and that helps as well. Need to work on insulating the canister, but I have restricted room to put anything around it. Any suggestions? I have found that the closer to the exhaust manifold you can inject the oil the better, doesn't work so well in the canister. Mine is set up 1 inch from the manifold with the injector angled at 20 degrees going with the exhaust flow, so it tends to enter the muffler easily (no back pressure - that's the theory!). |

Flyin' Hawaiian Fruit Punch
$12.00 One 4oz bottle treats 20-30 gals of diesel fuel. Just goggle "fuel fragrance additives" and you can get all sorts of crazy smells. Mix a few drops into a gal. of diesel. Maybe 4 bucks total per gal. Visit your local truck stop as some places carry the fragrance additive. Rocket cotton candy is a flavor to try. |

smoke oil
There's also this product from Aeroshell that is made for smoke but the price is still crazy and a 55 gal drum is the smallest size. http://www.mil-specproducts.com/Prod...HELL-SMOKE-OIL
The guy said that they have sent a different type of oil to the Air Force last week. When he asked what it was to be used for, they told him that it was a great/cheaper oil that produced really good results for the air shows. He forgot the name but will call me later this week. I'm excited to see what the price per gal. is. Sorry Brandon15, I just read your prior post concerning the aeroshell smoke oil....lol |

How about the Black Flag insect fog. You can kill mosquitos at the same time.

Summer Spray oil is less harmful than any of the other stuff people are mentioning to use as a smoke oil. Clearly few chemicals are safe to inhale (other than air which in some parts of the world is questionable anyway). Anyway I have a smoke oil recipe that yields similar properties to SupaDri You are having to inject close to the manifold due to the properties of the oil. Do you have a residue build up in the manifold? |

Have 2 planes set up with smoke one with a plain stainless header and one with a corrugated stainless header. I get less smoke from the corrugated header than the plain. which I am assuming is because of the greater surface area cooling more rapidly, all other setups being the same. Always happy to hear if you have an alternative smoke fuel, if you want to share. |
