They made a Sci-Fi movie about that....though the plane was a bomber with an atomic bomb and the pilots were females....who later flew some Zero's against the dragons. Dragon's killed most of em!

45 year old Sopwith Triplane flies again for first time in 45 years

This last weekend my son and I took out my 80 inch wingspan Sopwith Triplane for its first flight in 45 years. This plane was built in 1967 by a gentleman in Michigan from Bob Holman plans. The plane flew once in 67. The plane was purchased at an estate sale, the buyer built a big T-shaped crate for the plane at the site of the estate sale. The plane was used as a display for a couple who took it with them, traveling around the country to antique shows and the rest of the time it spent its life in the crate. The couple finally ended their business and retired in Florida, they brought the crated airplane with them. About 3 years ago, the husband passed away and the plane was sold and ended up at a semi-permanant military flea market booth north of tampa. I took my sons to see the military booth and saw the plane there. It was looking its age, upon closer inspection I saw that the plane was actually in great condition structurally. I traded the owner for a bunch of military stuff I had accumulated over the years for the plane. taking it apart was quite a job, it was so scale, it was not meant to be easily disassembled. Many of the flying wire fastners are hex head brass bolts, I had to buy a 1/8 inch nut driver to disassemble it. The plane is so scale, it has aerodynamic flying wires, a brass tipped tail skid just like the full scale and brass bezels for each instrument on the instrument panel. All three wings are undercambered on the bottoms. I inspected it thoroughly and did a couple minor repairs and began converting it to new style servos. I installed a Takon 160 outrunner powered by 7 lipo cells. We got two awesome flights on it Saturday. It flew great. My son says its the best flying plane we have (and we have about 20 of all different sizes). Heres a few pictures, to think it has been 45 years since this flew last, it really was great making it and seeing it fly again after so many years. I was told by a previous owner that this airplane had been in an issue of Popular Science way back when but I dont know how to find a copy of the article. A buddy of mine put his Fokker triplane up at the same time as the Sopwith, was quite a sight to see what looked like sets of stairs flying around the sky. I already have the pilot installed, next time it will look even better.

A full scale version of these is in a museum just 10 minutes from my house. I'm sure this model flies better than the full scale did. I guess it was a handful, and standing next to it, it is not hard to imagine. A video plays next to the display showing a flight of her, ignition being switched on and off and all.

Congratulations on a getting her back in the air. Must have been a very good builder.

His building was quite impressive. Thats one of the reasons I thought there might be a chance of getting it flying after all these years. The biggest issue as far as age is concerned that I have found thusfar is the covering. It had a white powder on the surface that I could not completely remove. I cleaned it the best I could and sprayed a light coat of Min-Wax over it. The other thing again is the covering, some of the edges have come loose. I have begun to run a bead of superglue along the seams, that seems to be working good.
Here is a link to its first flight, well, first flight since Lyndon B. Johnson was president anyway.

45 year old sopwith triplane model takes flight (3 min 6 sec)

Heres a video taken the same morning of my P-6E HAwk with a takon 160, 10 cells and a 3 blade 18X10 prop. The prop really made some noise, could hear it even when the plane was far out from us.
p6e hawk conversion to electric (6 min 14 sec)

Hello everyone! I am new to this forum and just thought I would share a photo of my 90" Airacobra. I did the paintscheme after the fighter group that used these in New Guinea. The airframe was built up off plans and was made in England approx 25 years ago. G62 Engine. It flys really well.
