Well I'm not worried about the control surfaces as I'm using large enough servos, swb control arms an reinforced the mounting area of the control horns. Besides, I've flown this AW 75cc like crazy for the entire season an still no breaks or cracks. I'm not pulling a wall or snaps. I've lost birds from the wing disintegrating but only on the cheap beaters. And, to be honest with you, I'm not sure if was the nominal speed that was the thrill or the sheer pleasure of hearing four 100cc+ birds making a coordinated turn.
If you know anything about these birds, then I'm sure your aware of the fact that DA-85's are a great fit and are actually recommended. Also, you will find that a da-85 will turn a 28x10. I'm running a 27x10 on a dle-111. This is still well within the parameters given the mods that I have made. The main difference is the weight. So in essence it would probably fly faster with the recommended DA-85 or ZDZ-90. Besides, this isn't any different than what is being done with most 42%ers across the board. By this, I'm saying that people are putting 170's on airframes that are specked for 150's.
This combo makes sence for a qualified builder/pilot. Again not for a beginner. However, I would like to try the comp Arf 2.3 extra. With some beefing up an a DA-120. Still not a rocket like the USRA guys but a possibility. Need to talk to Fred on this one.

I've bought a da120 for a carf 2.3 that was on sale on the carf site. After talking to Ray w Carf, he assured me that it will work fine. Structeraly it's sound but I'll need to cut out a bit of the cowel for spark plugs. The DLE-111 has angled plugs an may be an easier fit but I really like the 120's. Will post Picts soon I hope

I though I was crazy putting a DA85 on a plane this size... sub'd.

Are you going to have to modify the firewall? I never even thought about a 100 or 120. I had to cut about 1/2 inch off of the firewall for the 85.

Thanks Super. I know guys have been doin this for quite a few years now an got it figured out. I'm not sure where the term blow back an flutter come into play if guys are really using the right equipment an setting the birds up the right way. I know I'm getting over 100 mph on my AW 75cc w the 120 on it an I've had it over a year just trying to tear it up. . I may need to just buy another carf to have a backup plane.... That guy obviously had no fear.... I like it!!!!
As far as the firewall goes, I cut out an extra 3/16 ply to sandwich between the factory firewall and the engine mount dome. Since the origional was set back approx. 1/8" I glued in some spacers out of some 5 ply. I'll hit it with the belt sander to get the perfect fit so when I hysol it, it will all become one.
Not much done tonight except finishing up the canopy and filling the factory slots in the control surfaces. Found a nice little low profile water bottle that happens to have the same screw pattern as the Fiji's. Only a liter but that will give a little show.... score!! Hopefully I can cut new slots and have them glued tomorrow night.

That's strange... you need to push the motor forward for a DA120, but I needed to push it back 1/2 inch for a DA85?

The DA120 is 6.23" long, whereas the 85 is 5.84" long, and the DA60 is 5.28" so it doesn't make sense unless he is making his own motor mount and not using the fiberglass dome at all.

That's the same math that I had....

I know you guys are building the 330SC, but I would expect the fuse and dome mounting areas are very similar.

Yes they would be the same as the Edge as they were both prefabbed for the 60. Looking at your pictures I be they use the exact same motor dome, just different cowls.

Edit: I take that back. Just had a look and they are slightly different.
