To be honest...
Just get the one you like.
All the sims will help you with your stick reflexes.
None of the sims are real enough (in my opinion) to be able to just transfer everything you learn from the sim to the field.

BUT... the stick time you put in will help your muscle memory... so you react appropriately when your real plane does something.

JUST Do IT!

well I just ordered G3.5. I got a chance to fly both at the LHS, and It seemed like FS one had a slightly more realistic feel, but other than that G3.5 was more fun to fly and the graphics seemed a lot better. I had no trouble hovering harriering etc on either one, so it should still be really good practice even if it isn't quite as realistic as FS one. Basically I got it because of multiplayer, graphics, split screen, eye candy etc... thanks for the info guys

If you DO get FS One, be sure to get it with their Tac Con controller, or one of THEIR brand of radios. I fly my copy with a Tac Con often, and it's one of my 5 favorite sims. But... I just set one up for my Dad for Christmas and tried to use his Futaba 7CAP with the interface... I've been calling support and posting in their "suggested" forums for weeks now, and still no solution...

If I only had one wish, it would be that all of the major sims would come out with a demo to fairly represent their product on any given hardware setup. The advice to "get whichever one you like best" is really the best advice I've heard in a long time... but it would sure be nice to be able to try each one out and decide which one you liked!

Any MAC users out there using the Microsoft boot up software with any simulators?
Curious if you are happy with the results?

Short answer, yep!

Any of the newer Intel Macintoshes work great... avoid the Mini because its video circuitry is integrated and shares RAM which will kill most of the sims out there. I've not tried a Mac Book (the base model, not the Pro), and I'm afraid it will have similar problems as a Mini.

The current Mac Book Pro, iMac, and Mac Pro lineups, however, work brilliantly with all of the major sims out there.

I don't want to start the Mac vs. Windows debate here, but the one tip I've found most helpful is to keep your Windows installation on your Mac as "clean" as possible. Basically, do everything you can in MacOS, then when it's flying time, re-boot into WinXP where your sim(s) are installed. Don't load the WinXP partition down with any more software than you need to... Mine was a clean boot camp installation of Windows, followed by all WinXP updates, then add a modest AV/Firewall software (I use PC-Cillin), load up your sim, and fly. The ONLY software installed on my WinXP partition is a full install of WinXP, PC-Cillin, G3.5, AFPD, ReflexXTR, Phoenix, FSOne and TiVo Desktop.

There's been a fair bit about all of this written lately, but searching these forums for "mac" gives nothing because 3-letter words are too short... Searching for "iMac" gives LOTS of results, but most of them are NOT about Apple MacOS computers!

Hope this helps. PM or eMail if you need a hand with any of the basic configurations...

This one hits the nail right on the head. Exactly what I was thinking of typing as I read through this thread.

Gotta admit though, I'm a G3.5 fan just because of all of the extras that keep you interested in using it.

Ya, I ended up getting G3.5. I flew both at the lhs, and it seemed like FSone flew a little more realistically but G3.5 had more cool stuff to keep it interesting. However, I changed the sim rate to 125% and it seems to feel a lot more realistic, especially in anything 3D. The plane doesn't just float around when you take the throttle off in a hover. Both great sims though!!!

In short
For helis G3
Airplanes AFPD (you can even practice IMAC)
FS1 is a toy. I would love to try FS1 again with these tweakings people are talking about but AFPD needs barely any tweaking out of the box.

Can someone comment as to which sim is better for those who like scale-like flying of non-aerobatic aircraft, including flaps, landing gear and different ground/aloft wind conditions?

Also, does either sim have an Internet connection mode for those who want to practice formation flying or pylon racing?

TIA

hmmmm?? interesting thoughts..............I have played around on G3 for about 6 months and i play around on it alot. I was looking to get a second sim for just a different sim to have. I tried FS and totally hated it. I didn't think the physics we're good at all , it was almost like playing around on an arcade game or something. I spent a little time on areofly though , and i really liked that. but FS.........in my opinion doesn't even come close to G3...........not by a long shot.

I think it really all comes down to personal preference. If you can just go to a hobby store that has the sims and play them and which ever one you feel most confortable with and like the most.....thats the one for you. I have my opinions on the different sims and have played them all but they are just that, my opinions and others will be different. I can also say that I don't think you will be disapointed with any of the sims. They are all great and all have thier own advantages over the others. Anyways, try to find a shop that has them where you can play them and go with what you have the most fun on.

Well, I havn't flown AFPD, but I have flown FS one and G3.5. G3.5 is the only one with the option to play online and it also has plent of warbirds and some other scale aircraft with flaps, smoke, retracts, etc. The wind can be set at any speed from any direction and can be made to vary in both speed and direction. Even the angle, position, and brightness of the sun can be changed. However, I don't know much about FS one or any of the other sims for flying scale planes. Maybe somone else can chime in here. Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.
