Default Joe Nall 2007 (UK invasion!)

Hi Everyone,

I know this is a bit early, and i know we have brought the topic up before, but a bunch of us british people from the UK website and forum www.3DRC.info are thinking of going to the 07 Nall. We've hear its pretty awesome and everything, but id like to ask questions on the finer details if thats cool.

Does it cost money to fly at Nall, per day
Where is the closest airport
Where is the BEST place to stay (not neccisary the most expencive, just the most fun with all you FG guys)
is there camping on site?
Whats the smallest planes you can bring and fly in the day (it is a giant scale fly in? so no sub 78" stuff or something?)?
What is the cost of a week of AMA membership? or do i have to buy a years worth?
When do people arrive? when to people go?

As i said, i know its a long way in advance, but 5 months gives me time to plan a lot for this, its quite a big thing to get a lot of people, with planes to go over the big pond for a fly in. Im sure its worth it though

Many thanks
Ian

-Greenville/Spartanburg is the closest Airport, you will probably have to take a connecting flight to there from JFK or Dulles or where ever you come in.
-Best place to stay is at the field/camp/RV-camper for after hours activities, Hotels are about 30 mins away by car, but there are plenty
-Smallest during flying hours, 80" monoplane, 60-something biplane (IMAA legal) after "official" flying time ends, anything goes.
-AMA - you can get I believe a 3 month membership for like 20$ american, so 10 quid and your good to go
-No cost per day to fly, one entry cost-I think around $45, so 22 pound fifty or so.
-Must be an IMAA member to fly, 20$
-I arrive the saturday before the event starts, and stay the week, the even officially starts on a wednesday, but guys start flowing in the weekend before, and stay till the saturday or sunday that the event ends on.

With the exchange rate, it will be pretty cheap for you guys once you are hear. Hotels go for anywhere from 45-100$ a night, I recommend the Holiday Inn Express listed on the JoeNall.com website if you are gonna stay at a hotel. Otherwise camp. Hope this helps!

Ian, I will also be arriving on the Saturday before the event and leaving Sunday after the event. I will be camping on site. There are showers on site. The after hours part of the event is the best part.

Make sure that you look up the Giants crew once you are on site. I'm sure that we can provide a cold one or two.

So far weve got a list of about 12 people isnt the right Ian?

I spoke to someone a while back, it was Laura (Kasey9) who send me a PM saying

Hi, Just wanted to let you know if you come from another contry we do not require AMA. Just have you pass port with you. But I am sure you can talk your way in. I happen to be the one in charge of the gate. My name is Laura McKinney.. If you will pm me alot closer to the time you plan on coming I will make sure you have no problems getting in. Hope to see you in May, it is truly a great event. I have been to all 24. This will be our 25th Joe Nall.

Laura

Cant wait, only problem is that it might not fall on a holiday over here because about four of the group (maybe more) are still students

Ian,
Great to hear some of you might come across the pond to visit at the Nall. I'm not sure about the airlines that service it, but have a look at flying into Charlotte, North Carolina. It's a major hub for USAirways and their may be direct service to/from LHR or such. From CLT, you have about an hour and a half drive to Tripple Tree. Not to bad.
Not sure if I'll be there yet, but hope to see all you guys there if I make it.

Matt C.

ps...the Greenville Inn seems to have a pretty good group there most years. Gatherings at the pool nightly with pleanty of hanger flying, foamy flying and COLD beer! Yes...cold beer.

Thanks for all info guys. Camping on site sounds a great idea, we can buy a decent tent over there, saving us bringing it all over. I think thatd be the best idea, but of course not everyone likes to camp.

Question for Matt, or any airline pilots. As id have to bring a plane over (a week without flying!?) id have to crate it up pretty well. Of course, there is a limet to weight wthout extra cost, of 20kg (44lbs), but as i dont fly larger planes this would be no problem to me. What is the weight limet in the US? and on the connecting flight, where they obviously use a smaller plane, can they still have oversized luggage?

Some more questions. We over here fly on 35mHz, you fly on 72 am i right? id like to bring my own TX (JR 9x (9303 to you)) so could i just drop in a new module and find some new recievers? or would i have to buy a whole new TX?

Im just looking at flights, about £500-600, not cheap!

Thanks again
Ian

Ian, one thing you might want to think about for your plane is having it shipped commercial. I know that there are some that have it shipped to Triple Tree. Laura would be able to give you the information on the shipping address. That way it is one less thing to worry about with the airline.

What is the best company to do that with? like, these planes are my pride and joy, i dont want them being thrown about everywhere, just to get to nall and find them smashed to peices. I wouldnt look for the cheepest, but the best reputation.

Thanks again for the help

I don't know. I would contact Laura and see if she remembers what companies others have used. I do know that a good crate would be a requirement. There is a thread on the site on how to make one.
