You all made me nervous. I thought this "super thread" was heading south. Boulder, thanks for what you do. Butcher, thanks for being yourself. I know engines are near and dear to you.

Whew! There for a minute, I thought I was going to have to shut down my OWN thread!

Without getting into any brand discussions, let's get in to the cause of overheating, bad transitions and deadsticks, all which may be caused by the same factor.

I know this is simple, but it is just to establish a baseline for discussion. If an engine has a tendency to overheat, no matter which airframe it is in, adding baffling is just treating a symptom. The first cause may be poor fit and finish of hte engine parts causing excessive friction. This can only be maintained during the manufacturing process and the shop doing the machining may not fully understand the engine they are building because they have never seen one run, much less tried to tune it. Just because the parts may be CNC machined, AND to tolerance, does not mean that they are correct.

There are other factors that determine how much friction is generated while running such as; Lay Pattern of the finish marks, what method was used to perform the machining and the type of tool that was used to make the cuts. All these must be finely judged to produce a quality engine.

Not to harp, but if an engine manufacturer decides to use an outside shop to do the machining, the manufacturer must stay in close contact with someone at the machining facility to make sure that all of the fine aspects of engine parts machining are maintained.

Those of you, who have been to my shop, have seen that I have produced a limited number of high quality steam and gasoline engines and I have discovered may things that make an engine run better.

Does anyone have anything to add on the subject of friction that doesn't step over the PG-13 rating?

The Colonel

(yes, I realize that this is not an engine forum, just friends who fly together and have a common interest in engine quality)

Of course you know; the length of the skirt has a lot to do with the heat she puts out!

No problem priz, we could never let this thread get too far out of line

And Klank,

You know I'd never let that happen to your thread, ol' buddy

As for engine overheating problems that many times cause other issues...some others may be trying to squeeze every last rpm out of the motor and improper oil mixes, to name just a couple. However I do agree that a nicely machined and properly "finned" cylinder head would go a long way in helping the heat dissipation.

I'm off to the field guys, have a good day!
