This thing only has 40 more square inches than a Fliton AJ330, but the EP review plane weighed over 3 pounds more! The specs in the review said it had about 552 squares and weighed somewhere around 6.3 pounds - that's almost a 30 ounce wingloading!!! And it showed in the air. The pilot liked to do spins with it from a few hundred feet up, but could only do like 3 or 4 because the plane was dropping like 40 feet per rotation!
Remarkably, though, it did look pretty stable on landings, although it landed pretty fast.
I sure hope yours doesn't come out as heavy...I mean, MAN has a tendancy of building heavy review planes, that's for sure!
This thing feels super light. We will see how it turns out. Do you know what the guy's setup was?

I would think 60oz in. of tork per servo would be more than enough for hard 3D flying.

It was the EP version. They did use some pretty heavy equipment, though...the battery alone (TP 5S 5000's)weighs 21 ounces, plus they used a seperate rx battery (looks like a 4-cell 1100mah) and standard servos and receiver, as well as a spinner and the wheelpants. The motor used was an A50-12S.
If I were to set up this plane, I think I'd go with the Hyperion 3200 cells, as a 5S pack would only weigh about 12.5 ounces, a UBEC, Electron 6 Rx, no pants or spinner, and either the hitec 5245 digital minis or Bluebird 380MG's (these little buggers only weigh about 1/2 an ounce each, have metal gears and ball bearings, and over 60 ounces of torque! Oh, and they are only like $24!). I think the motor choice was fine, but as for the rest of the setup, I bet this would drop over a pound! at 5.2 pounds, this thing probably wouldn't be too bad. And, you could drop an additional 3 ounces off the top if you went with a Power 46 outrunner, (although I think the hacker will have more power)
About the batteries, the Great planes 3200's are the same cells, I believe. I have run them in a 6S configuration and a Power 60 that pulls at least 50 amps and they were good for at least 7 minutes. Each 3-cell pack weighs 7.5 ounces.

I am actually sorry that I chimed in with that comment about weight before reading their entire setup - I should have known they were going to make some heavy choices...

hey no worries man...you are right...5S 5000mah cells would indeed carry around some weight. i am going to be using a seperate 1100mah receiver pack as well...so watching or for weight will certainly be an issue for me.

btw...kyosho america put in the hacker A50 in their EP prototype as well...they recommend that motor for this model...with a 13x8 prop.

5,000 ma cells are overkill on this size model

I fly similar sized models on 1,100 watts 5s 3700s
flight times are 8/10 minutes with 2,100 to 2800 ma used

you will save $ and 5oz of weight

Folks,

Good news! Got a lil' present in the mail today! Time to get back to work on this thing!

As you can see they are standard sized servos and 4600mah batteries. I will talk to Kyosho about a lighter setup after I fly this one. I will be using a UBEC on this model. Not sure what receiver yet. Probably a DP 149 for the time being.

I just mocked up the plane to get a first weight on it for all you guys. Its 5lbs 14oz right now. All it needs is a receiver and pushrods. Im thinking it will be 6 on the money.

I have 40deg on ailerons (measured). I would guess closer to 60deg on rudder, and probably 45ish on elevator.

Wow Zak, 6lb is light, My Fliton Edge came in at a tad over 6 with 5S 3700's and hyperion 4025 outie. You've got more power than I have too!

Did the maiden a week ago. Got some video but wont have it up/edited untill my new computer shows up. It will be done before the end of the month for sure. The plane is a kick in the pants. The ailerons are a little slow and low speeds, but the tail surfaces are way powerful. Flat spins are nice, hovering is easy. Inverted harriers are super solid. Upright is a lil shaky but its manageable. I think youll have fun!

Sarge,

The power is not bad. I think the APC props suck (IMO). Once they get under flying speed they seem to cavitate heavily and lose all power. I would like to find some other prop and I think it would be even better. I also flew the plane with the 5000mah 5s packs. The 4600s are lighter, but arent broken in yet. Just got to give them some time.
