Default Need Help with 39% Edge

Guys,
Have started putting together a very nice Aeroworks 39% Edge. The RTC kit. Have a small, problem with the wing joiner. They suggest just a machine screw through a hard point into the wing tube, from the underside one on each side. Not too sure if I am happy with this. Would like to do something like blind nuts, two on each wing and screw in from inside off fuzz. Any suggestions. Wing in foam core with ply on root.

Gary

If you do the 2 screws into the stab tube right, it should hold up fine.

Just put a dowl rod into the stab tube, and than tap it to the size of the bolt.
If you squeeze the stabs in a bit when drilling and tapping the tube, you should be set.

But with these stabs, I tend to not take them off and on that much, and that way i never have a problem.

The main wings since its very accessable, I would add some retention bolts.

slap a blind nut on the inside of the root of the wing and pick a place thats reinforced on the inside of the fuse... basically look at every ARF out there for reference.

Are you sure there arn't any main wing bolts? that seems strange.

ON Stabs... yes i have seen the 2 screws into the tube retention method before,

but to be honest, I have never seen anyone use just two screws into the wing tube on the main wings... especially on that size of a plane!

Hey, I thought it strange as well, nothing man just hard points(dowels) on the underside of the wing and thats it. Will have to remove some of the foam to get behind the root to install some blind nuts. Wing is already complete. Illpost some pics tomorrow , just to show you whats up. Maybe im missing something.

What I do for this type of airplane is to use a fiberglass or CF tube with 1/4" ID as the anti-rotation pin. The length should be a such that when the wing is in place the tube is flush with the inside of the fuse. I then epoxy a 1/4 X 20 stud into the tube. When finished you simply spin on a 1/4 X 20 nylon wing nut to secure the wings.

Shawn, think this is the way I,m going to go. Dont have to remove any foam nothing just insert tube, epoxy in place, then insert stub ...... simple. Wow was having nightmare about this. Sleepy'C which way would you go if you wanted to have the stabs removable.

Does the Stab have a Hard point that you screw through into the Wing tube?

If so... add hardwood into the end of the wing tube and then drill through both tap and screw in a bolt. it works fine. My 30% edge and my 35% Yak are like this. The Edge has 60 flights and no problems what so ever.

Hope that helps.

OH. when you drill the holes, make sure your stabs are tight against the fuse, I used tape and a friend, almost compress the stabs a bit into the fuse (not too much) to get a nice tight fit.

AND looking at the root of your wing, I believe Shawn nailed it, that center hole looks like the place to glue a nice stud into.

Cool thanks will do that. What you think about lining the root on the stab with thin rubber? Also that hole on the wing root is the channel for the servo wires. Think Im going to have to either find a different place or as some light ply.

Guys,

My kit has the right thrust already build into the firewall. How do I go about doing the measurements to get the offset of the engine correct, so engine hub exits at the correct place centre of the cowl. Must add that the cowl has the same the cowl has the same poffset in front.. I know one could use the ladder method, but this baby is a bit big to be hanger her up on a ladder.

gary,
can you answer a few questions for me please.
1. how long ago did you buy your kit?
2. have you put your wings on the plane yet?
3. if so, can you confirm that you have 39% EDGE wings w/ the straight leading edge, and NOT 39% extra wings w/ a slight sweep back along the leading edge
thank you,
steve

Steve,

I have had the kit for about 4 months now.Its the Aerowork 39% Edge 540 T RTC Kit. The wings are on , plus stabs etc. Basically plane is finished except the cown and engine mounting.
The Wing has the straight leading edge.
