Default Robart Assembly hinges

This is an old trick that I've not seen mentioned so I thought I'd share this. If your using Robart Hinge points, during construction its sometimes necessary to remove and reinstall the control surface. If your using the Hinge Point your probably pulling foam each time. I don't use anything but epoxy on my hinges so I want the foam to stay in the hole for obvious reasons. I have a set of hinges that I chucked in a drill and spun the hinge in a piece of 80 grit sandpaper removing the barbs. I drill the balsa edging and actually shove this modified hinge in the foam to form the hole for the hinge to glue into. After covering, go with new hinges and the holes for the adhesive are nice and tight like you want them. I have over the years made up a complete set of these assembly / construction modified hinges for this purpose..Picture shows a before and after, Walt

Wouldn't you say the barbs are ther for a good reason????? I would think that having the barbs will make the hinges stay in place for a longer period of time... But i could be wrong..

Sounds like a good idea. Just remember to put barbed ones back in when your ready to glue.

Tony,

Read Walts first post here again.
These are for set up. If you use barbed hinges for set up, you gonna pull foam out everytime you pull the hinges off.
No Barbs until after the plane is covered and being hinged with glue.

Walt, sorry for a dumb question...how do YOU remove old Robart hinges when they need to be replaced, just drill out with a drill bit, or what ? is there a way without doing major damage to the wing/trailing edges?
