I make no apologies for my post. I stand firmly by what I said. Nor do I have any problem with anybody trying their hand at design. But you get what you pay for.

Yes, four years of higher education and eighteen years of practice in the field make me a "professional." It is a discipline whose exclusivity in recent years has been eroded to a great extent by easy to use desktop publishing tools. Now nearly anybody with imagination, a computer and software can crank out logos, websites, newsletters, etc. with little effort. But is it good design? Usually not. Anybody can design a really cool looking bridge. But would you drive your car over it if it were not designed by an engineer? I thought not.

A design can be as complicated and intricate as can be, but probably the best idea would be something fairly simple that will develop name recognition for your product. If you look at most other R/C product logos they are designed in that fashion. Like Jeff said, it can't much more simple than JR, but you can see that logo from across the flightline and you know exactly what it stands for.
EXACTLY my point! Companies spend thousands of dollars on identity development (I'm consciously backing away from the term "logo design" because that is but one component of a company's identity). And it's money well spent. Graphic designers, even teams of designers, spend untold hours critically analyzing everything from a company's historical context, its mission and the competitive landscape to make studied decisions regarding a path to the solution.

My advice, Neil, is hire a "professional," pay them well for what they are trained to do, rather than looking for a freebee on a bulletin board.

The rest of you guys just keep keep having fun drawing your logos. That's what it's all about right? Having fun?

StickerBiotch,

Thanks a bunch, there are always those who love to critisize and it's easy to do so. I appreciate you comment alot.

I also agree with the "simplicity" The last logo I posted could work in many forms. It's current form for web use and stickers, but also the eagle water mark and the text taken how they are and converted to black and white would be very easy and cheap to do in vinyl. I'll get one put together and post both the "bling" version and the B/W version side by side. Not sure how well it will work but my hope is a "eye candy" version and a "functional" version that will not seem like a different identity.

GOOOG DAWD lderby, your ego is out of control. (no offense)

Not every company (especially a small company or startup company) can, has or needs to spend a lot of money to get things going with a logo or a website. There are countless companies who have spent ridiculous amounts of money for logo and image design to come up with a lemon and the exact opposite has occured.

You call yourself a professional.........please try to behave like one. Your comments while possibly well intentioned come across well demeaning and egotistical. I'm sure you are very good at what you do in your profession but I believe there are better ways to broach the subject of using a professional.

Hmm... I have been a "Professional" graphic designer for around 15 years.. went to Akron University for Music Performance , education and graphic design.
I currently work as the head sales manager at a huge print company, and still work around 20+ hrs a week as a free lance graphic designer and I think anyone with a good idea has a chance at a winning design.

Now.. ask a normal RC schmoe to design a logo for a culinary company.. yea.. probably won't happen... but your forgetting that these guys immerse them selfs into RC every day. They look at other companies logos everyday in magazines and absorb what the trends in current RC design are without even knowing it.
So basically they are studying this arena everyday.
Who knows what one of these guys may come up with.

Also... working in the print industry, I see 18 year old kids smoking the 48 year old Old school "professionals" every day with NEW FRESH not completely "canned art school" designs.

In fact I can usually pick out the "professional" designs in 2 seconds because of the "canned - abiding by the rules" look of them.

I say rock on wanna-be designers... you may make 100 designs that suck, and you may make one that is killer.

Also... he can always hire a "professional" to take the rough design and make it work across all the necessary platforms...

Sleepy.

Dalton Aviation Logos
Dalton aviation ads, and banner ads,
Aerotech YAK 54
many many band logos for Sony, Profile Recordings,

It's not at about MY ego, I have little left. I'm simply trying to defend a discipline that has been perverted by the state of today's technology. And I take some offense to people fishing for (free) speculative work.

I embrace the wisdoms of your post, SleepyC. A lot of what you say has a lot to do with why I have moved on to other things. Old school graphic designers are put to pastures faster than NFL linebackers with a limp. That has left a few patches of thin skin on me.

Carry on boys. That's all I have to sat about that. Signing off.

Guys, Neil/Greg. I dig what you guys are doing. Keep going FULL ON, man!!! If I can help you guys out in ANY way, holler at me!!!

I do have to give out props here, and as much as it hurts, gotta give them to Sleep. A hell of a designer. Holler at him. And personal opinion here, I dig the artwork that Eric Bryant did. He did the grafix on my bird for Toledo. Eric is a good dude!!!

Later guys!

Sleepy, well said. I too am in the same boat. Along the way I have received several scholarships in the feild of commercial art and design.
If you did not say it I would have.

I completely dislike the pretentious "educated " attitudes we have out there.
Very disturbing.

Give me a break.

That is exactly what it is about. So why do you have to knock the people who are doing it. If you didn't want to participate, then you should not have posted in the first place. If you put 1000 monkey's with 1000 typwriters in a room, you will eventually get .... Did I just call us monkeys?
