Default How Suitable OS-BGX-1 35cc are for a Twin Engine Plane in USRA ?

Dear Sirs,

I am interested to go into USRA in a kind of learning manner first and with
small investments. I have couple OS BGX-1 35 cc, 4.1bhp@10000 engines.
They are economic, rock solid performance engines and that gives the
hint of Tuning them to get more power. What is your advice in general
and in this tuning approach; how to do that, drilling the carb and open
the exhaust, or what would be the best to start based on what you
have done or learned from some where ?

Best Regards,
Nikolay

Nikolay,
The OS-BGX-1 engines with 35cc displacement are too small for any of the USRA classes. The smallest engine that should be used is 80 cc in the F-I, F-IGT, and Biplane class. If you want to rework these engines for more power contact Fred French, 1545 CR 213, Bertram, TX, 512-489-9044; or Scott Baker, 40354 Racquest Ln, Palm Dale, CA, 661-722-4956. You will have to ask them for their e-mail for security purposes. They are the experts in GSR engine tuning and can tell you what to do. However, I caution you that if you have never done this their is a possibiliy that you can ruin the engine.
If you are interested in GSR go to our USRA website, usrainfo.orig, and read my "Articles" on how to get started and airplane design. Also read the rules, and description of the classes.
All forms of racing are expensive, and there is no way to get into GSR with a "small investment" unles someone gives you the model and the engine.
I will be happy to help you with any questions, just call or write and I will give you my e-maill address.

Dear Mr. Rankin,

Yes please, let me have your E-mail for more specific questions.

My E-mail and address are as follows:

nikolay@cs.tut.fi
Nikolay T. Tchamov
Tampere Univ.Technology
Korkeakoulunk.1, TH-108
33720-Tampere
Finland

I was reading the most of the materials on the www-pages of
USRA and I still think beside the current achievements, there are
"orthogonal" ways to make some pretty nice airplanes there for
much lower cost than now; maybe, let see.
I am looking forward continuing the discussion with you and the
other leading experts in USRA; maybe my questions will be too easy
for you to answer, or maybe we can still find also cheaper way for
one to get into this classes.

I do not know how to get in touch with the other fellows you
mentioned; please advice.

Best Regards,
Nikolay

Hello

Just some "old history".... Bill Hempel won the first giant scale unlimited race at Madera in 1990 flying an A-26 in the Gold class. It was powered by 2 30 cc Moki's with tuned pipes.

Bill Sr. mixed the fuel somewhere around 30% nitro. Props were 14x14 APC's I believe, turning a bazillion rpm. As I recall, the engines were stock out of the box.

The plane flew great, but was a handful when the inside engine died a few times going around the pylons. Bill and his skills kept it on track. It was big fun.

Modern race planes are much faster now, but it would be fun to see what could be done with a pair of small motors. Not everyone needs or wants to fly in the Gold class. Racing is fun at all levels.

Dave

Hey Dave....Good memory!

There were quite a few "small" motors at the first Madera...a Super Tigre 4500, a bunch of 100cc singles, the twin Mokis...etc. I don't think you could make a go of it with a BGX, unless you have two of them and maybe made a twin cylinder 70cc engine out of them...with tuned pipes....high nitro.....hmmm........nah, thats crazy talk........hmmmm................I gotta go!
