Hi Judge-

Yeah- I'm a member out at CVRC Club- actually a lot more active "in season" when the temps like engines a bit more. lol! If you've been there within the last few months and seen a punk kid (at 33 years, I guess I'm a wannabe kid...) flying a WH Sukhoi in the honda scheme, that's me.

As far as "local" flying out in the desert, There's some slim pickins' right there.... There is a group that flies at "The church" as everyone calls it on sturdays, but officially, it's the overflow parking lot (all grass) for Southwest community church on the corner (or close to it) of Washington street and Fred Waring dr.
Mostly electric, but I have brought a winch out there once with no friction from the crowd.
It's funny- D.U.S.T. holds a charter for that field, and if you remember, we were the club (also a member of dust so to speak) that had the polo fields in the early '90's in indio.
Every now and then, you can rub elbows with Buzz Waltz, and Hobie Alter, among others on saturdays. Mostly IMHO, it's fizzling out though. sad...
I have been recently flying slope at Little Mountain in san bernadino, and just for the heck of it, I'll post a link to a fun fly that's being held out there next sunday- It's basically set up for a retro feel- like coming back to the '70's or something- Coyote's Oly's, Hobie Hawks, etc- anything unobtanium, or built up and vintage is welcome, and it is also set up as a kind of swap meet if people wanna sell anything- I'll post a link in a few-

BTW, Have we met?

Maidened my Reichard Champion today All went well, even got into some strong lift and scored a 20min flight off a 20sec motor run. I'm using a turnigy 3542C on 4S turning a 12x5 aeronaut, which draws 45Amps at WOT. This gives a very impressive climb rate. At the moment it feels quite nose heavy on the factory CG setting. Going to remove some of the nose weight and try again tomorrow if the weather is good.

Put two more flights on the Champion today I made a CG adjustment, added some more aileron differential, and added a aileron to rudder mix. The changes worked well and it goes where it is told and doesn't skid around in thermal turns. CG is spot on now and the model indicates lift quite well.

Only problem I have now is it wants to climb once you start picking up speed. I think this maybe related to the decalage angle. I haven't got an incidence meter to I may just try a small adjustment and see how it goes.

Other than that this thing flies beautifully. Both flight I had today where 30min plus on one 15-20sec motor run. Which gets me to approx 600-700 feet. Lift conditions today where great, blue skies, light winds and I guess because the ground is so dry and bare it's making a super heat pad.

I also installed my altimeter logger from hobby city, which works very well. My max recorded altitude's were 1239ft on flight 1 and 1343ft on flight two.

Here's a few pics of the beast.

Its the eagle tree one. You can use it as a stand alone or as part of the eagle tree system.

Well the wind finally eased up here today so I got anther chance to fly the reichard champion. Got to the field and was greeted with blue skys and light and variable winds. First flight was ok but wasn't much usable lift around, just some light bubbles but not enough to climb away. But it was still quite early. Waited an hour or so and a few small puffy clouds started to appear in the sky. Put the glider up again and found some good lift which got me a 35min flight on 2 30sec climbs and a max altitude reading of 1239ft. I was pretty happy with that.

The conditions just keep getting better and I noticed there where a few birds up high and some dust devils whipping across the field. Time to go up again. Only took a few minutes to find some strong lift that just keeped on going up. Had to bail out of it as I was starting to have trouble seeing the model. Only thing that keeped it visible was the flock of hawks following my wing tip. So I went in search of some more lift at various places around the field, which I think is good for improving thermaling and air reading skills. Managed to find a few thermals but none as strong as the first one, and I landed at the 25min mark. While it was not my longest flight I did manage to achieve a PB in altitude at 1479ft. Time to put some bright colours on the underside of the wings so I can still see it at extreeme heights.

Just finding thermal flying so addictive at the moment as each flight is different.

Another good thermal day here today. Managed to thermal up to a new personal best height of 1661ft. The new bright yellow stipes under the wing helped at altitude, but once it gets around the 1200ft mark everything starts to go black and at 1600ft its getting very small and imposible to see any colour difference. I would love to get over the 2000ft mark but I think I am already approach the limits of visabilty with this model.

Another great thermal day here today. Only had the one flight as it was almost an hour long. There was lift everywhere and strong lift at that. Maganged to get to a whopping max altitude of 2864ft according to the alt logger. I got in under a nice fluffy cloud and it just kept on going up. The cloud aided in visability otherwise I would have lost sight over to model, since it was almost a black spec under the cloud. Great fun.

I was told by a fullscale sailplane pilot, that if you see a white cloud that's dark on the bottom..the dark means there's heat there ,go to it and you'll find lift..He says you can really feel it in the seat when you go under one of those clouds ! Tried it a few times and it seemed to work and the birds liked it there too !!

OK, I admit it. I have been flying DLG (discus launch gliders) and competing in F3K contests this year. Have another contest each of the next two weekends. Still love my prop driven planes, but there is just something about these ships that is surreal.
