I think it is great that my son likes to fly. He has a lot of different interests, and is good at several things besides flying. However, flying is the one thing that I can share with him and I would not trade that for the world.

Here is some of our flying together: (Warning, large file, Quicktime format)

My Dad got me into the hobby and supported me till I was 16 or so and could get a job. Pretty much when I started making money for myself I started supporting my own hobbies.

my dad got me into the hobby when i was 12(now 14). Originally he was all into it we had a mini ultra stick that we shared. he was learning to fly with me.I talked him into getting me a mini funtana x about 3 months into it. He crashed one ultrastick so bad we just bought a new one. then he crashed the new one twice (i rebuilt both times) and he called it quits for himself. I stayed into it though. He still took me to the park to fly my planes at least 3 times a week and took me to the hobby shop to look at stuff. for about 6months after getting the funtana i got a fomie to learn 3d and not have to worry about crashing it. About 1.5 years of me being into it he bought me a 27%extra at a swap meet for a reasonable 450$. after 6 months i had less than 10 flights on the plane because the big glo motor was very un reliable and didnt have enough power. Once again we were at a swap meet and found a nib dl50 for 350 so we bought it. Now i fly that plane at least 2times a week. So my dad was a big suporter for about the first year and a half. After the first year and a half he stopped taking me to the park and just told me to fly at the local airport in the mornings(small private airport). Now i cant get him to take me to the park, or the flying field, or even most events even though they are only 30 min away. he just tells me to get one of my friends to drive me. If i want to go to an event thats a little ways away he makes me pack my stuff in the plane only to go drop me off so he can go back home. Most of the time now he wont even watch me fly unless its very convient for him. So he is a supporter but not a supporter all at the same time.

I have always loved airplanes and tried building a full scale in my young adult life (Glasair). My son and I started flying RC when he was 6 yo. after trying some team sports and a brief try at BMX and dirt bikes. He started with a slo-stick and crashed it once or twice but I think he got bitten by the RC bug right off the bat. When he started 3D'in foamies at 8 y.o., I knew he had a talent. He wanted to get into IMAC and quickly progressed to an electric 27% Wild Hare flying Basic at 9 yo. but the plane crashed at a contest and he was very upset. That was the time I had to make a decision on whether I could afford to support him in the competition end of this hobby. I decided to go ahead with it when I found out the plane went down due to an error from my electrical set-up. He has never crashed a GS since and now, at 11 y.o., he is flying intermediate in the SW region and freestylin' GS planes. I guess when he got to the point of convincing me that he had the talent to do this, I invested the time and money to see him reach his goals. I build and he flies. Some day he will want to build and fly his own planes and then maybe I will fly more and he can teach me how to compete. We both do what we are good at and it works well and, more important, we are enjoying each other in a hobby that we love. The money? What price do you put on a solid relationship with your son or daughter.

We have met a lot of great people in this hobby both at competitions and fun flying.......I can't think of a better way to spend my life.

My parents have supported me a lot in this hobby. My parents will chip in a little money here and there for my planes, but I have to come up with the rest. My dad never really supported me as far as flying. He would give me 40$ here and there, but he never actually wanted to see me fly. My mom, on the other hand, is thrilled with the hobby. She drives me to the field whenever I ask. She likes to watch me fly, and she even requests certain manuevers! Last time I was flying, she asked me to do a rolling harrier for her! All in all, I'm very pleased with the level of support they give.

PS, I'm 13. I've been flying for 3 years.

I will admit, i was curious of this too.
" How are you guys below age 25 able to afford a 30% + plane?"
But before i read this thread, i thought it was all from your parents.

I started flying 3 years ago, i got a hobbico skyfly for my birthday, and i couldnt be happier
Now im starting to appriciate what my parents are doing for me. My dad just gave me a 250$ loan to finish up an At-6 texan ( link - http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...an-maiden.html ), wich i am paying off now. But i was always supporting myself financialy in this hobby, saving my christmas and birthday money to buy a new plane, and doing odd jobs for my parents to buy the equipment. I had thought that they didnt support or like what i was doing, Untill i relized how often they would be supporting me. Taking me to the field 4-5 times a week, Driving me an hour to the LHS to buy some new parts.

But overall, i think if your complaining that you dont have a 35% 3D monster, i would say that you really dont want it. Because if you really wanted a 30%+ plane, you would stop flying during the weekdays, and get a job to save up.

Just what i think.

Hey Pvtzemerak, i agree with you fully! When i bought my 33% Gp Cap 580, i bought the airframe used for a GREAT deal! But i had the money because i have a summer job, and a "part-time" job during the school year. When gathering parts during the school year, i was able to get a da 100(that took the longest to save up for) i bought the servos first, and that was all that i paid for. Then my dad had literally felt obligated to pay for my batteries/switches/regs and then receiver. So he voluntarily paid for that and i am glad. But when my cap died the day before huckfest, he saw how long i had been saving up and how hard i had worked to get the plane. So he then said, "I'll get you your parts." And as soon as we got home thats exactly what he did, ordered the parts, so...i am thankful in ways. But it bothers me in otherways that, when i paid for my yak, same way as for the cap, i paid for the plane, engine and servos, he did the batteries and receiver. But the part that bothers me is that he still freaks out when i get low to the ground with the plane! Even though he paid like 1/8th of the whole totalled price, he still acts like i am about to wreck his plane............. hehe. He's probably still scared of me flying his planes after what i did in FL. LOL. So i see your point! Save up!

i'll buy/build any plane for my 9 year old. i will do all i can do to keep his interest high in this hobby because i know how much it meant to me to be in the hobby withmy dad when i was his age! now... he too is responsible for taking care of his business at school and at home in order to still receive these priviledges..

we NEED more kids flying! (and more dad's buildinig AEROTECH's!!! LOL)

Yea, i would love to have a 25% plane, but i think i need to have the motivation.
i could save up for it for a couple of years, but i would need to stick to it rather than doing something else
But i finally got a part time job now that school is starting, so i plan to save up
