Default Re: How many of you get support from you parents?

Believe it or not I can remember when I was a teenager. Support from parents was slim, but it was a different world then. I can remember three planes that my parents bought me. 2 were cox CL planes with .049 engines. The third was my first RC. It was a 2 channel (rudder, elevator) with, again, an .049 engine. I flew the wings off every one of them. All the fuel and support equipment was on me. When I was in high school I worked two jobs, and after paying for gas, license and insurance, I didn't have much Money to play with.

By the time I graduated high school, I had 3 decent RC planes one was a 3 channel H-Ray (high wing, flat bottom) It had a .19 and was rebuilt so many times that there wasn't much of the original wood left. Next was a Gentle Lady, 2 channel glider. The last was a Butterfly, 2 channel glider that had been converted to a 3 channel with an RC .049 to get it to soaring height.

I actually had more help in the hobby from a friend. What he did for me was to sell me used equipment for way below what it was worth. He is the one that sold me the H-Ray and my first 4 channel radio. If I remember right it was about $50 for the whole works. That radio was selling for about $250 then. This man is still my main flying buddy. He has been in the hobby for longer than he would like to admit. He still talks about the first RC radio he had. It was a kit that had to be built. It was a tube radio even the receiver had a tube. It was only a one channel push button radio. Push once and the rudder went full deflection right, push it again and you get full deflection left, once more for straight.

Sorry for the ramble, Just bringing back memories.

my parents are suppostive in the sense that they take me to the field and buy me little things every now and then. they never really had a lot of money to give me for the hobby so i had to fend for myself. im 16 and work as a waiter to pay the planes and other expenses. i worked all summer when i was eleven, cutting grass in order to pay for my superstar. by the end of the next summer i had my certification. i kept mowing through lawns and planes and just recently ive been settling down. i was finally able to afford a 50 cc plane after 5 years of learning the hardway! now i just do a lot of trading and working hear and there and i have to give up what ive been working for the last 5 years for my dream car.....nissan 300zx!

I got support for my first year but after that i was on my own. the first and last time my mom went to an event with me was the youth master and i think that was because it was in south carolina. My dad took me to a flyin on new years day in 06 but other than that hes never been anywhere but a golf dome with me because i still couldnt drive. Im driving now and ive been to toledo twice the huck fest pittspurgh multiple times and columbus once. the huckfest is past columbus and east of cinncinati i live 30 miles south east of lake erie. I am working on my second plane its a GP cap 580, i find that christmas is a very easy way to take care of the practical stuff and fortunally my birthday is four days after christmas I bought the plane with the money i got from relatives and i got my zdz 80 repaired for my b-day from my parents. but im working on getting servos and stuff and its all on me thank god min. wage went up

When I was growing up my parents supported me 100% Not financialy but with support and travel to the field and events. I had to earn the money for everything except at christmas and birthdays I always asked for modeling supplies. I was not exactly the model child and modeling is problably one of the greatest things to happen to me. I have a feeling if not for this hobby taking up most of my time I would have gotten into a lot of trouble like alot of others with this time.

I always wanted to fly as a teenager but my parents thought it was a waste of money. I had to wait untill I was able to do it on my own. I cant wait for the day my son shows interest in the hobby and we get to go buy a trainer. He is 7 now and is all into his 4 wheeler and X-box. I'm pretty sure that I'll fund him as long as his attitude and grades stay up.
Brian

Just remembered my grandfather bought me a chrome P-51 Testors CL model when I was young. I got it to run but never got it flying. Wish I still had it.

My parents are realy supportive. My dad mostly, he takes me to the field when i want to fly and takes me to competitions. He usually enjoys it because hes a pilot and likes planes. finacially I pay for prety much everything but they will ocasionally buy me bits and bobs like glue etc. Usually wen i need/want something expensive they'll pay for it and ill pay them back over a couple of months so that my bank isnt completly empty, but even then i still have my savings, i have two account my pay goes into one and $10a month goes into my savings so that ive always got some money. I work after school for an hour mon to fri and i manage to keep my planes going. With the job that ive got i managed to have an extra 300 46 size, a spitfire 46 size and 2 electric foamies. Im now goin to start saving for a patern ship for competition. So the only advice i can give is not to give up on ur hobby because you cant afford it . go get a job mowing lawns, a paper run anything any money will help and dont sit around on your a$$ all day doing nothing

Well, I'm not a teen, but my dad helps me out more now than he ever did! When I started out, the only time I ever really got stuff was for xmas, and even then, before I actually started flying, getting him to get me a plane was like pulling teeth! His response was always "why would I buy you something that you are just going to go out and crash?" He is of the old-school, flew a little bit of control line and crashed a bunch of gliders and figured that is how it went - "build-fly-crash", LOL!
I do have him to thank for me actually getting into planes, though. He took me to one of his friend's house that had a bunch of gliders that were sitting around and baught a Goldberg Gentle lady for me. From there, I was pretty much on my own, taught myself how to fly it, flew it for almost a year under different sources of power (slope, powerpod, highlift), and actually never crashed it, at least not enough to break it - gave it to a friend, though, that proceded to crash it into little pieces within seconds!
Anyway, I am almost 32 years old, have my own house and my own planes, but live 1300 miles away from my dad. He misses having me around and missed watching me fly, so he bought a GP Ultimate 160, DA 50, and pretty much all the fixens so I'd have something to fly when I visited...
Bottom line, though is that it is YOUR hobby and, unless your mom/dad are into it too, you probably shouldn't expect a ton of help from them.

Well I just turned 26,, All through my last 8 years of flying my parents have been very, very, supportive, they say atleast I am staying out of trouble,, and that statement is true,, All through my four years at East Carolina University and even after I graduated they still buy me airplane stuff,,, like I said I am 26 now, I am planning on starting North Carolina Highway Patrol Academy, but this past christmas they gave me a big gift certificate to the LHS,, and they also bought me a Matt Chapman 1/3 Cap,,,

As a little boy of 12-13 years of age, I had $3 per month allowance. This was about 30+ years ago. My next door neighbor had an Enya 15 or 19 that he broke in on top of the roof (building structure allowed this). I was so envious of him and his Sterling Ringmaster. I wanted it so much that I decided to buy whatever I could until I had all the pieces. The first month, I bought a bell crank for a 19 size control line airplane. It was so precious to me as imagined finished ringmaster around my new hardware. My parts collection never made it past that bell crank. I knew that I could not ask any more than my pocket money allowed. No one pushed me into the hobby as a youngster. If I got all the stuff from my parents, I doubt that my memory of my first bell crank would be so dear and precious to me.

During my high school days, I worked at a local toy store. It allowed me to be close to the stuff I loved. I believe those were my happiest times. I now can afford things more readily. All the planes and helis that I get these days excite me still. However, the fondness and the satisfaction that I got during my younger days would never be matched.

I sure wish that my parents bought me the stuff I wanted so much when I was younger. I'll bet I would appreciate this hobby much less (umm maybe little less )if that was the case. I believe it is in our human nature that we value more of things that were obtaind with most effort.
