My son got me back into this hobby about 4 years ago, when he was 6... I got him an Air Hog, and I got a foamy trainer... we both crashed early and often! He got tired of it and went back to Nintendo.. I'm still with it.. .I hope he comes back some day, but if not, I'll keep buying the latest games, as long as he's having fun, doing well in school, and doing his part around the house.

Not sure if any teens are posting on this thread as it is nearly 2-1/2 yrs. old !

At any rate ... I flew control line when I was a teen as it was nearly impossible to afford radio as they were $5-600 in late 1950's !

I love to support teens who come to field and always give them planes and radios etc. if they show interest... you teens could do the same and I'm sure there will always be older guys at field who would love to give you planes and equipment ... if they can see your interest and coming to field often.

Paying your own way and working for your equipment is good for you and will always be best way to enjoy our hobby in my opinion .

Any support one gets from anywhere for anything also supports ones efforts in this Hobby.

That said of course I still get support from my Dad ! And I am 50 years old.

I get some support from my parents, they bought me a trailer and my dad takes me to some events. But as far as buying and building planes, thats all me. Ever since my first one. I'm the only one in my family who flys. Lots of kids don't know what it's like to have to work for somthing, and i guess thats what my parents are trying to press upon me...

When I learned to fly and compete it was my dad that did most of the financing, but as I progressed through the sport of Pattern, I was able to get a few sponsors that basically pay for alot of the stuff. (Planes, radios, motors etc....)

now all me and my father pay for are the trip to and from the contest. and the eating and room. and even then my dad usually split the bill.

Ok I've just read through a great portion of this thread! And decided that its appropriate that i chime in! When i was first born,( literally the day after i was born) my dad took me to the airfield to watch all the planes fly and so that i could see his plane. Well we were out there and the word is that as my dad was flying he had left me on the workbench. So when he came back he noticed that i was holding a propeller. Knowing my dad, he immediately took it out of my hand and started panicking, right after that he packed up and took me home. So when we got home, he told my mom that she was going to go to the airfield and "babysit" me while he flies, and make sure i don't do anything dumb. Well 3 years passed. And then my dad finally decided that its time for me to fly, so he bought me my first radio a Futaba 6exa. And then he started putting me on the buddy box. He then realized that i was actually getting it. So one day we were at the field. And he decided that he will take-off and flick the trainer switch and then i will be in full-control. So then when that happened, i was doing it all. flying in circles, and doing an occaisional loop or roll. But then my dad said," let me grab my coffee out of the car, keep the plane flying in circles." so then i decided, well the old guys not looking. Let me try something that i do with my toys( i used to build those little lego airplanes when i was little and throw them on the ground pretending that i was crashing.) So then i pushed the elevator stick down and the plane went DOWN DOWN DOWN! So then my dad comes back and asks me where's the airplane? And i said "Airplane crash HEHEHEHEHE" Now my dad being a typical polish uptight dad says, which way did the airplane go. i said ' that way" so we went "that way" we found the airplane in the woods, probably like a nice 200 yards from the pilot station" it was pretty bad (broken fuse, wing and tail) he then said " Andrew your not flying Rc planes until your old enough to understand what it means to crash. So being three years old, i simply cried. So then my dad came up with a nice solution. He said " I am gonna teach you to fly CONTOL LINE" well my dad (a former Masters CL competition pilot back when he lived in Poland) brought me to the control line field. He then put me on the handle and said, ok your turn. I soon told him that i think i'm gonna crash because i am so dizzy! So then he said "ok so try to do a loop and a few wing over's it will slow the plane down." Ok so i did. Well soon we went off to our first CL competition, i was 5 at the time. And it was my first time going out of the state. So off we went to NJ for the competition. And i got 1st in basic childrens class. And my dad got 3rd in masters. He was EXTREMELY aggravated after we left and said that we are never going to go flying again. Well then, a few years later, my mom went down to the basement with me and let me stay down there with all the airplanes. My dad arrived and was in awe to see that i was STILL INTERESTED! So he said ok, we can try flying RC planes again! So we went out to the field, and it probably took me over a year to learn again. And then when i was 9 i finally soloed. I was quickly learning new stuff! 3D! And then i was begging my dad for one of those COOL GAS PLANES! So then he finally bought me a profile and then the streak of planes went on. So finally 2 years ago, my dad said if you can learn to do a harrier i will get you a big GAS PLANE! WOWIE MOWIE! My dad finally said a BIG GAS PLANE! So i learned the manuever. And then my dad said, ok now learn a "bla bla bla" and the list just kept on going. So then i had learned all the manuevers! And then i was tired of hearing his "when you learn this i'll get you a big plane!" When i got home i asked my mom if i gave her the money for a big plane would she order it for me. Her answer was "YES!" So then in came my new 30% TT-Toc yak 54. The plane showed up. And my dad was like "HUH?" so he finally noticed what we had planned out and he then said "Andrew, i never thought that i would say this, but you've figured out how to get around me." So a week later i found a big white box from DA on our steps. And it was literally CHRISTMAS IN JULY! So my dad said "alright kid you've earned it" and then he payed for my engine. But then i was stuck paying for my servos and etc. So then after having flown the yak for a while and then last year i was given the opportunity to buy a 33% GP Cap 580. So I DID! But my dad wasn't the happiest guy in the world! he said, your gonna have to pay for this one alone! And the worst part was we didn't have a car big enough to transport it! Well this past year after I had gotten all the parts for my 580, my mom was in need of a new car. And my dad had been saying "we need a car for planes." so we got my mom a new 2010 Toyota sienna mini-van! now i was all set! But as the story goes. My parents have supported me with all of my glow planes. But when i switched to gas. it was all me! My dad occaisionally pays for my batteries and servos for the big stuff. But its only if i "deserve" it. Therefore, I say "i am glad that i have a job" So my parents have and haven't been supportive in ways! hope this helps.............jeeze this post is too long!

My dad got me in to this hobby, now he regrets that decision because of all the money we're spending.

Just be lucky they like to fly. Neither of my sons are interested and could have killer planes if they were into it. Oh well...they have their own interests.

Yep, it's hard to believe that, as a kid, I was uninterested in planes. Now I can't get enough of the hobby.
