I have a spare Mintor 170 with ES Carbon pipe laying around that I would like to build a knock around 3D'er for. Problem is I can't find too many (if any) options that will allow for a pipe tunnel. I know about Seba's 140 sized Funtana but do you guys know of any other options...kits preferably but an ARF would be okay too.
FYI - I know there are a lot of 2M patern/AA birds out there but thats not what I'm after (already have a few). Just want something to beat around. Thanks in advance for your input.

Nice engine. I have three. Try a Showtime. It should fit. You would have to build a tunnel though.

I love the video of Chris flying the Giles...very impressive! Thanks for the sugestions. Mike, I had not even considered the Showtime. Lots of guys are flying them with the 160 gassers (MVVS/EVO) so I'm sure the 170 would be great. I agree, the Mintors are awsome motors...I have two and would not trade them for anything on the market.

The only thing you may want to consider with the Showtime is weight. I have an O.S 1.60 in mine. Tons of power, but it weighs 10lbs. To much for that plane. If I am not careful it will snap out on me. The Mintor is lighter than the 1.60, but I am not sure by how much. I needed to add quite a bit of lead to the tail to get it to balance. If you decide to go with this plane keep this in mind. You may want to move the wing back about an inch if you can. This will prevent you from having to add weight like I did. I love flying the plane, but I beleive the 1.60 was the wrong choice for this airframe. I think the 1.70 would rock it good, just watch that c.g. I think my c.g is 7 3/4 inches behind the leading edge at the fuse. I would hate to see you invest in plane and not be happy with it. I just can't really think of anything else that would fit what you are looking for.
What A/A planes do you have right now. I have one Olympian Medal kit left (the plane in my avatar). I plan on building an A/A plane with it next winter and putting one of my 1.70's in it. Basically I am going to try to get is around 10 1/4 lbs. make big ailerons that go all the way to the fuse, enlarge the elevators, and rudder with counter balances, then hope for the best. I have never built an A/A plane yet, but I have always wanted to. Any pointers for a first timmer? I have built many pattern planes over the years, just never made one strictly for A/A. Should be fun. At the 2002 Nats QQ won the A/A contest with a ZN Excellance. It was awesome. It was the first time I ever saw a pattern plane TR. Very cool. I see you are from IA. Do you ever compete. We are both in District 4 for the NSRCA. Maybe we will run into each other some day. I would like to see you A/A planes. Mike Darr |
