Hi All
I've just orderd a DL50 and have a few questions. First off i've read that you need to run the engine in on different oil to when you have been using it a while, which oil do i need to start with? Secondly, in the UK and at my particular club we has a noise limit on aircraft of 82db @ 10ft, i'm planning on running a MTW header and full can rather than the standard pitts type muffler. Has anyone got any ideas of what the db output is on a DL50? Cheers Duncan |

I have 2 DL50s and I started on a 32:1 oil mix for the first gallon or so and then switched to a 50:1 mix; that was using Stihl 2 stroke oil which is non-synthetic. I now use Castrol TTS synthetic mixed at 50:1 and my engines are running great after 18months and 12 months use. There are lots of oils out there but if you use a well known brand you can't really go too far wrong. As far as noise is concerned be prepared to have issues with passing the 82db limit. I run both of mine on KS cannisters and although they sound "quiet" they are both close or above the limit as measured in accordance with the BMFA guidelines. Part of this is due to the fact it is a powerful engine swinging in my case a 23x8 prop and hence displaces a lot of air especially at full throttle, not that I need to fly at full throttle apart from the odd upline or pull out from hover. This is my problem with the noise restrictions as set, some guys fly at WOT on their small glow engine and are not pinged for noise, but pitch up with a beefy 50cc or bigger and immediately there is a muttering about noise issues! Good Luck! |

Cheers mate
we have the same problems, some old guy with a ben buckle model with no exhaust flew with out question. but my mate gets abused every time he get his 2m drenny out of the car. I was thinking about running a 22x8 vess prop as they are meant to be quieter. Just need to decide what can to use, KS, MTW or someone mentioned a carbon one that's meant to work well. No matter how quiet i get her, like you said some of the older members will complain about it, might just have to change clubs !!! Duncan |

TBH I don't think there will be a lot of difference between the KS/MTW as far as noise is concerned. I run a 23x8 on my YAK and it is fairly quiet, a mate is running a DL on a Chip Hyde quiet pipe and a 24x8 on a WH Extra and it still rips. Think it has something to do with the airframe being a lot slicker and maybe the pipe has something to do with it? At the end of the day a good use of throttle control can help to keep them off your back??!! |
