Default Project 3W 44% Ultimate

Hello guys, my cousin and I are working on bringing a 10+ years old 3W Ultimate with an old I think it was 3W 160 b4 engine (has 32x10 on it) back to life. My cousin got this plane as a gift; it was stored for over 10 years. The very first thing we did was changing the fuel lines and charging up the batteries to see if the engine would run. Half an hour later, she has started nicely and ran smoothly. So now it was shopping time. we went ahead and got 8x 8511 serves, sc12 powerbox with 2x duralight 4000 battery packs for the receiver along with sulvian smoke pump and some other goodies and took her to our friends shop to work on her. I will try to get some pictures of her later but now I really could use some help.

We are thinking to use one Durlalight 4000 along with duralight 5.3V regulator with heavy-duty switch for the two ignition units, and the questions are.
- is it safe to share one battery (4000) with the two ignitions?
- will the two ignitions running through one regulator be ok?
- since this is an old 3W engine, I am thinking it could only have old style 3W ignition, will it be ok to use 5.3 volts with them (it says 4.8 volts on the ignition units), the reason why 5.3 and not 5.1 is simply because duralight regulators that come with heavy duty switches are only 5.3 and 6 volts, so we thought running a bit more voltage and getting the befit of heavy duty switch is better than running 5.1 volts with a simple switch (again we are thinking to run both ignitions units of the same battery/regulator)

a couple of pics

more pics to come

Thanks in advanced.

Ahmed

You lose your redundancy using just one regulator/battery... but most big airplanes run one ignition anyway unless you are running a 3W twin spark, so I dont think its too big of a deal. The regulator and battery can definetly handle two ignitions. They draw very little compared to servos. As for voltage to the old style ignitions, 5.3 should be fine. A fully charged 4.8v nicad pack is well over 5.3 volts when fully charged, so if you kept it regulated to 5.3, you should be fine. It might be a good idea to verify with 3W though, but common sense states that should be fine if they are calling for a 4.8v pack.

I have an older 3W 150 in a Carden Giles 202. Before I swapped it out the plane had a duralite 5.3V reg on it. It's an older plane and worked FWIW. I agree with Tank, I think you'll be alright, but you might wan't to verify w/the manufacturer. Good luck, that's a neat looking plane. You might want to pull the carb and clean it, after sitting that long they can get pretty gunky. They might run good for a while, but if a piece of crud lets go you are screwed. Don't ask me how I know
Cost me a set of wheel pants and two nice dings in the wing.
