Just happened to see this at the LHS (cars though, not planes). A buddy of mine is already using it in his 9X, and is all smiles about it. I decided to post it here as I rememebr that there was a thread I saw before on the issue of finding Lipos for TX use. Looks like the car boys were ahead of us. It the LRP VTEC 2700mah Li-Poly TX battery.
The size is about the same as our regular 8 cell nicad packs. It should be available in the states too, at the rc car shops. Regards. P.S. based on the fact that the TX average consumption is 200mah, thats about 13 hours usage there!!!!! PLus the self discharge is so minute that you can probably go for weeks without charging if you only fly 4-5 flights a session. |

Do you know what company would have them here in the states? I have been looking for a lipo for my DX7.

Just a note. Not one single radio manufacturer approves the use of Li-Po packs in their transmitters. I know they are popular, but none of the people who actually make the radios say they are OK to use.
Besides, I can get a 2700 NiMH pack for $40 or so, not jeopardize the warranty and not have to worry about torching my house or TX. I am one of those stuck in the stone age I guess since I just do not see the big deal about Li-Po in a TX.

I have been told that running more than 11V is going to seriously damage the RF output circuitry in the TX module. Can anyone confirm this? I need to replace my TX battery and would like to go Lipo but I personally feel a regulator of some sort is going to be needed.

futurase: i really don't know which companies would have these in teh states, best bet would be to talk tothe guys who run cars, they will definitely know where to source these.
Judge/Shawn: I am running a lipo on my Sanwa M-8 (car radio) with no problems for the last one year (made the pack myself). My buddy who has installed this battery (the 2700 lrp vtec) on his 9X is also not facing any problems, and he has the radio on continously for 4-6 hours at a go when he is running his sailboat. I don't think that the higher voltage is a problem, as our nicad pack when fully charged are running at 11+ volts initially, then drop to 10+, the lipo stays at 11+ for a longer time before dropping to 10. From what I know duralite supply lithium packs for TX use, and I have not heard of any problems with those. I do agree that none of the manufacturers have specifically said that lipos can be used, but it seems that it should not be a problem. I do recall that there was a picture on another thread of someones 10X running lipo cells, which the guy did himself, hopefully more people who have been running lipo for some time will chip in and let us know their experience. |

Shawn, when I asked a couple years ago about my 9303, the horizon guys said that the radio had a built in regulator. Been running a lithium ion pack for 2+ years, no problems.

Transmitters have a built in regulator that regulates the TX pack down to 9volts that is why you can use lithium without a reg.

I have been using the Duralites in my 10X for several years with no problems. The voltage reading on the display screen, indicates 12.5V when charged.
I have been told by JR field reps that JR does not recomend thier use because they could affect the RF module. I like the fact that I only need one simple charger for the plane and tx. |

How often do you fly? From March - September when I practice for IMAC I can log 200 flights. If the Lipo is going to create a problem I am more likley to see it as opposed to someone who flys one or twice a month. Shawn |

I also know JR reps who run the Duralite TX packs too though and have since Duralite introduced them. The key is not to have the TX on like say on the bench doing some setup for long periods without the antenna screwed in. JR will tell you not to do it with a OEM TX pack as the module wil get hot and shorten the life of it. Duralite's LiIon's will not hurt a 10X, 9Z, 9C, 9303 or any TX at all.
I have no ties to Duralite whatsoever. Norman Ross Jr. |

I think we also must keep in mind that, as far as I know, JR doesn't make a lithium battery for a tx....so of course they are going to recommend against it. They would rather have you pay top dollar for a mediocre JR branded Ni-Cd pack then get a good high capacity lipo. Also, we must remember that a freshly charged Ni-Cd pack can reach as high as 12V....which is only .6V below a fully charged 3 cell.
Just some thoughts. |

I also use lithium, but lithium ion, not polimer. I fly year round, and average over 5 gal. a week. I can fly for 2 days on one charge without worry of dropping below 9.8 and it averages 11.1 for 90% of the time, but when they do finally fall off they fall hard. I also have seen the lithium packs melt a transmitter and seen then cause the regulator to overheat and fail. The only thing that I am saying is whichever one you use take it out to charge it and put it in a bunker to keep from burning something down if something go's wrong in a cell. If you are not someone who flys 7 days a week I still say that regular nicads will suffice and you can get packs up to 5000 mah now that won't burn up your house, car, trailer, etc. if a cell go's bad.
