Default Air Wild Edge 540

I thought I would talk a bit about my build of the new 29% Air Wild Edge 540T.

I received the kit from Jerry at the AMA Convention in Ontario. After returning home I got an order together for the rest of whet I needed.
DA50R
5- Hitec 5945 Digital servos
Air Wild servo arms
2x24" and 2x6" twisted extensions.
Smart Fly Optical Ign switch
24oz fuel tank
After everything came in I started the plane.
I installed the DA50 and its electronics then the ignition 1/2 of the Smart Fly electronics.

The manual says to install the gear next but it would be a pain in the xxx to do that on my bench so I left it for all but last. (I did put the axels and wheel pants on the gear but didn't put the ailgnment screw in just yet)
I used the supplied CA hinges (you cant use any others as there are no hard points for say robarts etc...) and put the rudder on the vertical stab, ailerons on the wings and elevators on horizontal stab, You do this so you can properly line up the control horns.
This was about the most uncomfortable part of this build. I didn't like diging out the extra wood needed to install the control horns, I also have not come to grips with CAing them in place either but I am sure they are smarter than I and they will work just fine. Time will make me feel comfortable with it I am sure.

Then the servos, push rods etc... were all installed.
The rest of the electronics were put in and it was time to put the wings on and set all the controls up how I wanted.
OOPS. a problem.
The wing tube wouldn't fit!
It was a pretty shiny black, but it didn't fit so I started sanding, and sanding..... and sanding.... until all that pretty black was gone. Now it fit just fine......

Anyway I got it together, set it up and I am ready to fly.
I took it to the field 2 days ago but I had not finished the spinner so it wouldn't balance. I needed to run the motor anyway so I did.
Wow. Its going to have so much power. Under 15 lbs and a DA50. I actually have not weighed mine but I used everything asked for and it is to come in at 14.9 lbs.

To sum it up in a short note like this? Its a great built plane and beautiful as well, and its got real ultracote covering. I was really impressed with how its built, its light but strong, real strong. The only couple of things I would like to possibly change or at least have the option of changing would be the CA hinges and not having to sand that pretty black wing tube.
I am happy to answer any questions and will send pictures. I will also write how awesome it flies after I fly it. hopefully tomorrow!!!!!

I also set up the control throws as the manufacturer said....then I put full bang throws on everything on another switch. I can't wait to try it!

Sorry Yak 54. I didn't have the email notification selected so I didn't get your questuion. Mike

Anyway They are fine. I haven't gotten to do a lot with the plane with the DA rich and on 32-1 fueloil mix but so far I like them.

Hi rcplane,
I've got mine on the bench now. Still waiting on a few things to come so I can complete. I didn't have a problem with the main tube but the stab tube was a little sloppy in the fuse. A little packaging tape fixed that. I didn't like the straight pull pull either. It is hitting every where. I ordered an offset arm from TBM so I could cross them. So far I really like this plane. I have changed a few things in the recomended setup. I am using peerless bats, pitts muffler, and choke servo instead of the kill switch. Maybe I will have it finished by the time the weather brakes here.

I'm glad your tube fit.
I had one side of the outer stab tube come loose from the side balsa (the outside skin with the covering on it), but everything else is alright.
I crossed my cables at first but got slack at full deflection. I uncrossed them and dont have any now. They do hit the main former closest to the exit holes, but barely.
I am just starting to lean my motor and do a few more things with the plane. I have been doing a lot of burning fuel to break in the motor and get it over with (alot of knife edge from one end of the runway to the other and knife edge figure eights).
As far as the rates, my low rates are just right (the recomended rates). I will see about the Hi rates soon enough. They are very effective that's for sure. I did a blender yesterday into a flat spin and when I tried to flatten the spin with full controls they were way to hi, the elevator any way. It flipped the plane right over. I didn't expect it to be that strong. This might be the first plane I set up with tripple rates, either that or increase my expo so I don't over controll so much. I will just have to see how it goes.
You will enjoy it though.

I wrote a product review...a real one, you know honest and all about how it flew etc... for High Flight Magazine about 4 years ago. I will see if I still have it. I have had 2 computers die since then, maybe even 3?

The Air Wild planes are great. I had the Extra version. It flew wonderful and is the lightest in the 50cc class. Mine weighed exactly 14.5 lbs set up as the manual. It's quality is of the finest quality and the AirWild people as as good to work with as they come. And the price is absolutely the best for such a high quality plane. Makes me want to buy another one.

I agree with Wind Sox I really liked mine. It weighed 14.9 with a smoke system!
I was writing a lot then and was told a couple more 50cc planes were on the way so I had to sell my airframe or I might still have it today. Like Wind Sox I would buy another one and Jerry is a great guy to work with.
