so, could I fly the sequence, and start recording every 30 sec then combine them in movie maker and have a vid as long as I want?

Wayne/Bob/Kevin - I have a question for you.
Where I live it is too cold/snowy to fly outside now - so I am practicing in the sim. There is no judging seminar near here and little help (some pattern guys but not many.) I plan to travel to one or two contests this summer... the Canadian nats and probably the Kelowna IMAC. Work/family and distance mean that I won't make a lot of contests for the next few years... but I still plan to train and go when I can. My quesion is - if I were to post links to my practice sequences (simulator) would folks be willing to look at them and give feedback? Benefits would be a. everyone would get some help on how to judge things ... b. it would help me ![]() Or - is this even useful or is the simulator just too hard to judge? ... just asking. And just in case - here is a Sportsman one that Kevin already looked at for me. I know the spin is a 0... real hard to make airplanes stall in APFD (or more likely - just the pilot.) http://68.151.33.14/CRHAMMOND/Video/Panzl%201.wmv Chris. |

I wonder if it would be useful for learning purposes if we had videos of individual manuvers and common mistakes?

I just watched it.
Overall, its really good! You shouldnt have any trouble if your flying your real plane like that. Some small comments but remember, its VERY difficult to judge stuff on a sim. * Your spin entry is forced or flown into. Let the plane stall by itself. The nose and one wing should drop at the same time. This one isnt directional so you can go either way with it in a no wind situation. If there is a cross wind....... well never mind we'll be here all day talking about that. * The top of the loop with the roll. At the apex of the loop you should be upright as that is the halfway point in the roll. The roll must be centered around the loop. If you start it at the 2 o'clock position it has to be upright at 12 and finished at 10 o'clock. Your roll rate will determine how long it takes you to completer the roll so start it accordingly in the loop. * Elements on lines. Make sure when you draw a line with an element on it like a roll or a snap that the element is centered on that line. A few times in the video you'd pull or push into something and do the roll right away, then draw a long line after that. Its hard to do but be conscience of it. Its one if the things I struggle with most. * Slow down a little. You'd finish one maneuver and pretty much go right into the next one. Its works but, the judges will feel rushed watching it. Give them some time to digest what you just did, add up deductions, talk to the scribe, write a number down etc...

Thanks Wayne - your time and advice is very much appreciated.
Yea - the loop with roll was nasty - I normally have that one nailed. I do rolling loops all the time for fun - I forgot how to time one to roll over the top not using the rudder LOL. I still feel busy flying these sequences - esp there is a lot more throttling than just flying around for fun. I am just now learning to slow down and count for the line segments to get them even. I practiced the Intermediate all fall - then got advice to fly Sportsman my first few contests. That was about the 10th time I flew that sequence. I haven't been flying very long... so I took the advice given to start slow. The lack of space between my manuvers is due to the fact that all the local fields are small. None of them come close to an IMAC sized box - I'm lucky to have 1300 feet to play with. So I learned to turn, turn, loop, turn, turn etc real fast to keep the neighbours happy. I can't wait to fly out at the huge sod farm in Toronto this summer and fly a big box! Not to mention meet some of you fella's! It's a mission to crate everything and fly 3,000kms... but well worth it I'm sure! |

Counting is an OK method for centering but, keep in mind as you move up in classes you will have more energy robbing maneuvers to do on uplines. 2 seconds prior to a 1-1/2 negative snap will probably be longer line than after the snap simply because the plane has slowed down. Some guys will ad an extra second after stuff like that.
I try and look at the base of where I am, the top of where I am going and try to center elements that way. Its not easy and like I said, its something I mess up a lot.

You say you only have 1300 feet to work with, are you talking ground space or airspace? If your field is only 1300 ft wide the airpace above it is unlimited or are you restricted due to NO FLY ZONES because of houses or the such? Man you live in the Prairies you should have unlimted airspace! You can always slow the aircraft down. What size airplane are you flying? If you make it out to the Canadian Scale Aerobatics NATS, which I hope you do, you will see that the guys flying 35% & 40% airplanes don't fly them fast. Back off on the power between manouvers and it will give you more time to setup for the next one, as Wayne pointed out. Glad to see there is a little pocket of interest out West. Have you tried to recruit any other club members or flying buddies? Even if you could get one guy then at least you have each other to practice with. Have fun and I hope to meet you this August here in Ontario at the SA NATS.

Hey Jim,
Yes it's Chris. What I was referring to is we have about 1500' long ground space (at most fields) due to obstructions (tall cell towers and the like), residential no fly zones or a combination of the two. Runways are between 400' and 600'. Ceiling is 400'. You can fly out about as far as you want in a few places... not that that helps ![]() I live in Edmonton... none of the fields are in the middle of nowhere any more. We lost 3 fields last year to new development. We are very close to the airport no fly zone at 3 fields too. There is a very large new facility opening next year in the middle of nowhere (on private land owned by Ledcor out where they have quarries, storage etc.) Unlimited airspace pretty much I try not to fly fast. I am flying between 30% and 35% planes... My smallest (other than park flyers and my Showtime which I don't count) is a 75cc AeroWorks Yak (94"). I have a GP Cap 580 and a Radiowave Panzl S-330 which is what I plan to use for IMAC. The GP Cap flies nice and slow on a PT 27x10 prop, is very well trimmed and flies on rails, it will be my backup airplane. The Panzl I just built over the winter - I am guessing it will be awesome. Last year I had to run 3-blades due to noise issues - i.e. I got complaints from other flyers about my big noisy gassers - a whole other story there. People seem to have issues with guy who only has 1 or 2 years at the sticks flying big airplanes is all I can say about that (never mind that I flew 1,000+ flights my first few months... and raced RC cars at a high level for 18 years...) No grudges here HA HA. This year I have canisters on all planes and plan to run 2-blades. I found the 3 blades caused me to fly quite fast in some airplanes since I had to go up in pitch... maybe that will help. |
