Default Painting comp arfs

For those who have painted their base color comp arfs, on average how much weight did you pick up by doing so?

For two stage two color with light clear just enough to shine out the orange peel on a 40% CA300 about 15-17 oz's.
Two Stage two color uses 23oz of color fluid and just at 19 oz of clear fluid.
Single color you could get away with about 25oz of fluid one color entire airplane but the weight would be about the same as two stage due to the heavy pigment.
hope this helps.

Ok thanks, looking at that white comp arf 260 in the classifieds and curious how much weight it would add to paint it, as I am not a fan of just adding vinyl.

Single stage or two. full color or just stripes. Just curious the weights we found were for a full color job and full coverage clear. No primer used just a chemical etch for the gel coat.

Nope not enough clear to wet sand.

Gst.john sweet plane i think i have seen that one before somewhere on this site.

If you are just going for color single stage is the way to go. graphics make single stage hard to deal with. Light weight can be had with colors like reds and yellows over white in light coats. Gst.john will agree yellow is bi*&h to get even coverage with.

Sherwin williams is one of the thinner paints out there so weight is probally lighter than i am used to. I can not get it where i live. I have to stick with HOK, Nason, Dupont, and PPG all of which are heavy pigment paint.

Metallic paints will also add weight fast because of multi coats to get the flake to lay down evenly.

The next thing i am trying is a new clear that can be thinned 40% to see if i can get a better shine with less clear should flow better if i can keep it from running on the edges. pricey though $85 a quart.

Best luck man and throw up some pics when done.

Some colors cover better so less paint. thin the clear 30-35% and get it done with one coat. Some planning ahead and you can get a 40% painted and only add a pound. Here are a few I have done, a couple of G-202s and Zak west's Votec.

If you want super light go for clear only with pigment (your choice of any colour) over white and you end up with a candy .

We painted a white 3M Extra 330. Added about 2.2lbs. Started with an epoxy primer coat and then Spiers Hecker Base coat-Clear coat in a bake booth. Added a few vinyl grahics as well.

Done this Super Extra over the top of a Futaba scheme and put 2lbs on, had to use epoxy primer to stop the old scheme bleeding through. If you are going to paint one make sure you get a white one and as Twizlair says use a chemical etch for adhesion, epoxy primer is very heavy.
