Well, I'm starting the build on the Jtec 35% Extra 330. I'm hoping to have it done and flying at Joe Nall. If I do get it running and trimmed by then all of you FG guys are more the welcome to take her for a spin. (On the trainer box of course) I've had my eye on one of these for a while and finally now, I'm getting around to putting it together.
When I started looking for another 35% I thought real hard on exactly what I was looking for. What I was really looking to do is to find a plane with a very strong medium between 3-D and IMAC. I know IMAC's are much better suited for 40% planes, they do track better and are less susceptible to wind. My main problem with 40% planes as far as IMAC competitions are concerned is that once sequence is over, trying to reel in a 40% bird onto a runway your not used to, with trees that I may or may not see at the last second can be very stressful. A smaller 35% plane makes me much more comfortable at new fields, and if your not comfortable with your plane, or you have things on your mind other then the sequence, thats going to show in your flight. So I needed something that I could 3-D for freestyles, but also do some real serious IMAC with too. Thats why I chose this plane. If you look at the wings (no pics yet) They have sharper leading edges then most planes. This is going to help with my stalling for spins in IMAC. It'll stall a little bit easier then a plane with a real fat leading edge. This was one of my biggest point killers in IMAC. With my last plane I had problems stalling the plane properly. All the judges were telling me that I was forcing the stalls, and they were right, I was. Most times I would bury the elevators and it still wouldn't drop a wing tip. So these sharper edges should help with shedding the lift a little better at slow speeds. Also If any of you have flown the Jtec Panzl you know that it flies extremely well. I've had a decent amount of time behind the sticks on that plane and I love the way it feels in the air. I mention that because the wing and elevators on the Extra are identical to the wing and elevators on the panzl. The fuse is obviously different so it will fly differently then the Panzl, but I don't expect it to be dramatically different. My guess is that it will probably only effect the flight while in a knife edge. Well enough with the blabbing lets get onto the build and pics. Pardon my messy shop/rec room. Basically this is how it comes out of the box. I got the canopy cut out and mounted, I'm going to take it back off and paint the inside wood part of the cockpit. I'm also going to be installing button head allen screws to give it a little extra hold and to make it look a little more bling bling. |

Looks good out the box.
Since you'll be busy with that, send me that edge in the background and I'll keep it warm down here in South louisiana high of 80 today

Yeah, my 540 is definitely a beat step child. Thats on the fixin block this winter too. That thing is the most fun I've ever had with a 40%. Doesn't track very well, but for 3-D it's ballistic.

I thought you had two that I didn't know about for a second. Didn't realize there was a mirror there.

OK, back to work. I wanted to dress up the canopy a little so here's my simple and easy way to do it. Thanks to Rod S for the idea. Took 4 1/2 inch thick sheets of foam, glued them togeather and cut them in the shape of a dash board.

From there I traced out the pieces on a sheet of balsa and glued em on, sand, then apply paint, and done. Took me about 10 mins to get it all done. and it looks sweet.

From there I masked off the canopy and sprayed the inside. I think it makes it look much sharper. The Spray came from Home Depot.
