Prop Adapter Removal
What methods are available for removing the prop adapter on a Hacker A30? Must I destroy the one on there now?

How is it attached??
Heat might work, gentle prying.... a pinion pulling tool... all depends on how it is on there

It's a pressed fit adapter. Tried heating it up, no joy. Maybe will try some dry ice tomorrow when the ice cream store opens up. Don't want to pry on it and mess up the Hacker.

Pressed fit?? Or pinch fit? Set screw??
Can you get to the top of the shaft for the center pin of a puller?? Or is it covered? If there is alum from the adapter covering the top of the shaft, carefully grind/file it off until you expose the shaft...then you can get the center pin of the puller on the shaft, providing you can get the ears of the puller underneath the coller. Or vise it, after you expose the shaft top, and tap it out. Carefully. Does the shaft remove from the hacker?? It might be a real bear. If you start gritting your teeth on it, send it to hacker...it you slip and dent or hurt the windings you are done. Last edited by bosshoss; 02-18-2007 at 09:49 AM. Reason: one more thing. |

I have a hacker 20 that I can not get the shaft out of either. But the broken shaft is still stuck in the rear section. I have tried prying, pulling, twisting, heating, cooling, everything I have tried has not worked, and if I get anymore violent trying to get the shaft out I will end up damaging the housing or magnets.

Drill and tap two holes in the face of the prop adapter, one on each side of the shaft directly across from each other. Drill two holes in a large flat washer that will go over the shaft. The two holes in the washer should be spaced so that they line up with the holes in the face of the prop adapter. Put a prop nut on the shaft just far enough for the washer to solidly on the shaft. Put two bolts through the washer and down into the holes that were drilled and tapped. Gently tighten the two bolts, keeping the pressure close to the same so that you don't start getting an uneven pull on the prop adapter. The prop adapter will come loose very quickly.

You must me a machinist, because I know that I personally do not have the skill.....even clamping it in my drill press, to drill and tap a 3mm prop shaft. I don't think I could do that not much "meat" left to work with either.
