Wingman, try an electric starter. Mine is awful to start when cold unless I use and electric starter, I have an old yellow sullivan and a new 12AH battery, starts it every time,

May want to check ignition battery voltage.
Mine, which was an old engine in theis thread ( early post ) would not run on nothing but 6 volt packs.
When I would use 4.8 volt pack it was hard starting, would miss at high rpm, and would quit running after a few minutes.
6 volt pack and I never had an issue.

I have an electric starter, its basically the only way I can get it to start. I've got about 2 gallons through it so far, and its only been able to be started by hand 3-4 times. I try it from time to time, like I did in the video, I thought it might start since I had set the timing to what most people consider 'normal'.

I'm a bit reluctant to try a higher voltage battery pack, Jody has warned a number of times that 6 volt packs will burn out the module sooner or later.

I'll add some video later.

The chattering of the electric starter is due to the rubber insert being worn out, I wore it out on this engine, after it chatters I often have to re seat the rubber insert. This was an hour or more into the process and I was getting pretty tired.

I grew up in a service business and eventually owned it and ran it for a number of years, and made a simple observation. When a customer has a problem, if they are rational and understand you are doing your best to help them, you will bend over backwards to help them, someone who is irrational and insulting usually has a hard time finding someone who is willing to help. When I need something serviced, if I am easy to get along with, the service person really wants to help, I call it "Kill them with kindness", and quite frankly it has served me well. Blowing your top rarely works.

Sweet!

Does that philosophy work on engines too?

Per Jodie's recommendation I tried the engine with a 5 cell ignition battery, and eliminated everything from the ignition, so no switch and no Opto Kill, the battery plugged directly into the ignition. This is using the NGK plug and has the hose clamp locking the cap to the plug. The first part of the video is on a 4 cell and then I changed to a 5 cell, the engine started easily, but continues to die after just a second or so.

High speed needle is at about 1 1/2 turns, low speed is about 3/4 turn which was good a few days ago, but may need to be reset with the change in timing.
