We use a Dupont dealer near my dads place. They are nice enough to tweak it to our liking. Luckily the guy there runs RC cars so he will mix us up a few ounces at a time which might cost more in the long run but we don't have to worry about paint going bad on the wall. We do buy things like primer and white in large quanities. We have found that a good white base coat works best for us reguardless of what color we are shooting over it.

WOW. This thread makes it abundantly clear that painting parts is not for the average Joe. The knowledge of materials required, application techniques, and equipment needed seem to make it unrealistic for the average guy building a kit to paint his own parts with any degree of success. So, that being the case, do most guys pay a visit to the local auto body shop with parts in one hand and credit card in the other?

I'm going to be painting my next cowl totally white and then just add a few strips of trim with Ultratrim and then clear coat over them. However, I'm thinking about getting a body shop to do the painting. Of course, this is assuming that I stay with my current scheme. I may do a different one and send my cowl to DSP and then just match the trim lines on the plane to what they do.

Dave,
One last question, how did your prep differ between the plastic for the canopy and the fiberglass? Same?

Awesome, thanks Dave. I'll be doing my own when Walt's done building it. I've got a paint booth at work and air guns at my disposal...

Has anyone used both the PPG & Chromabase paints?
I'm wondering which one is better. I use the ChromaBase base coat/clear coat since the closest auto paint store carries it. It works just fine but I'm wondering if anybody has compared the two. |

ejb,
i'm not a professional painter but have used both and would say they are both excellent..BUT i always use this clear because i paint in the same space as i build. it's really awesome stuff, in the correct weather it dreis to the touch in 5 minutes which really helps w/ dust. http://www.performancecoatings.dupon...3_HC-7600S.pdf |

PPG and DuPont are both exellent paints and both work exactly the same. I use PPG because thats what my paint shop carries.

Thanks guys.
Now since I'm a cheapskate is there any difference in price or are they about the same? Last edited by EJB; 02-28-2007 at 04:23 PM. |

Dave,
Great article. Before I painted my first car, I went to the local automotive paint dealer and bought Duponts automotive refinishing handbook. It has the correct proceedure to apply all of their paints. It tells you which paints go with which and how to apply them. It has all the do's and don'ts, and at the cost of some of these supplies, you don't want to make any mistakes. One of the most important things is safety. Some of these paints have isocianates in them and a proper resperator is a must. Hope this helps. Dave Archer |
