Great thread Dave. I'm in the process of building my Dalton 35% and I was wondering if you can get a remotely decent result with Lustercote or other spray paints like that. Is painting this way a must? I'm not after the "perfect" result, just shooting for "good enough." .

I'm currently in the market for a spray gun and I was wondering what your thoughts are on the these two from Porter Cable:

Hey Ben
The first gun would work better for small paint jobs and it is very similar to the one I use. The second gun would work fine but not nessesary for doing small jobs and being bigger just makes for more hassle when cleaning it up. As far as air compressors go you just need one big enough to keep up with the gun, a small 1.5hp compressor will keep up just fine for small paint jobs.

Thanks Dave! I was thinking of using the bigger one for doing the primer coats, but if the smaller one is similar to what you use, I'll just go with that one instead.

Hey guys...

Awile back some folks asked about water based paints... Auto Air Colors came up. I've used these alot, and they work really nice... but there are a few tricks. Thought I'd pass them on. Maybe I'll post a new thread so this one stays on track....

Auto air on the colors, PPG on the clear on these....

I sent you a PM about this but I would love to see a thread. Auto Air really does have a lot going for it as a hobby paint:

• 4oz bottles are ~$16
• Its water based so there are no evil fumes. Its not toxic so you can work in your garage without the fancy paint booth and moon suite
• You can take infinite time between colors or coats. Put the project down and come back next week.
• In works with all urethane primers and clears
• You can spray it with an air brush.
• Its supposed to be easier to get a good paint job than with Urethane, its n00b friendly.

You take your time, paint your stuff and then take it down to the local auto body and have them clear it for you.

The only drawback I can find is that my dealer at least wont color match the AutoAir. But looking at the pics you posted you have obviously figured out how to do that.

Well I just got on ebay and bought there users guide dvd to the creatix auto-air paint system. I should have that in a week so we'll see how user friendly it really is. I'm looking for somthing I can spray in the basement as well so we don't upset the family if you know what I mean. It does look appealing from what I read on there website. I also want to paint my motorcycle helmet as well. I might practice on that before I practice on my new plane.

Well, when its time for me to paint I'll post what I find. Should be time in a few of weeks. I don't have access to a compressor so thats a big piece of equipment that I need to get.

I was wrong about 4oz bottles being $16, try $7 or even less. You can easily get all the paint, including colors needed to mix, for under $100. My scheme is going to be simple 3 colors, red, yellow and blue.

I've watched the demo of the auto air system of paints and they sure make it look user friendly. You can basically work as fast as you want as long as you heat set it with a gun or oven. It has excellent adhesion and they have an extensive color selection. I will be definately trying this product in the near future. If anyone would like to rent the video on the system they can find it at smartflix.com they rent all kinds of instructional videos. It's alittle more expensive than say netflix but they have videos you won't find anywhere else.

Here is my progress.....

PPG K36 Prima sprayed with a SATA Minijet 4. Was my first time spraying with a paint gun and was impressed on the improvement over the rattle can. I don't think I will ever spray out of a can again.

PPG DCC Concept will be used for the colors but the cold weather is preventing my progress.
