Default H9 extra vs H9 edge?

Any comparisons would be of great help. I do know of a later version of the extra now being lighter. That would essentially make it more comparible to the new edge they are selling.

By the way it will be flown for 3D. I am familiar with the basic differances between the actual designs(330 vs 540) what I am looking for however is what the final word would be between these two birds as offerd by the same company.

Thanks and again it is the Hangar 9 edge 540 vs. the H9 extra

HL - I've had both, and they are awesome birds. I'm still flying the H9 edge, but I have to say the Extra is definately the way to go. On my edge, I'm running the same ZDZ-80 that I was on the extra. The edge is definately a lot lighter, and the vertical is absolutely amazing. The power/weight on the Extra was very similar, but I have to say, I think it flew MUCH better. I learned to hover and TR on it - definately a confidence booster.

Edge pro's: flys very light, a bit smaller than the extra
cons: requires alot of mixing on KE, very delicate airframe, landing gear delams after a few harder than light landings

Extra pros: durable as hell (bounced mine off the ground countless times), great 3D trainer, great value
cons: required "de-tuning" on the throws initially

That's my 5 minute comparison. Go ZDZ-80 on the Extra. You'll love it. I'll see if I can dig up some photos for ya.

Extra 330 definitely. My friend was hovering his on Sunday 3 feet off the ground in a 30 mph wind. Doing harrier landings and really abusing the thing. It holds up really well. Extra all the way!

Thats awsome guys. Thanks. Hey Max, pics would be great. I could use some eye candy in making a decision. I know there are alot of great birds out there, but I can get this one here in Canada. Anything from the good old USA adds 1/4 to the cost.

How about the mid wing design of the 260 and 540? Is the lower wing of the 330 an issue with snapping out at low speeds?

Buddy had the Edge and loved it, but I still prefer my Extra330 any day. Stable airframe, and if you are into anything like flying a straight line, rolling harriers, snaps then the Extra will take the Edge. A slow role with the Extra will turn some heads. The Edge won't do it nearly as elegantly.

Ditto on the powerplant.. ZDZ80 all the way.
3W 26/10 wood prop from what I have learned is the best overall fit.

Just did a bit of a cover job on the bottom for kicks.... I love this bird.

OK guys, how about a completely shallow comparison for two closely matched planes. Pure awh factor. In person which gives a more dominant presence? Which is prettier. I know the extra has a more graceful line where as the edge has a more ridgid stance.

Which is the better looking plane(H9 model) in real life? I do love the full scale Edge over the Extra but between these models I am tossed.

Opinions...............

I built this mustang when I was only 15. I am now 34.It was an attempt to share some times with my father. I hoped it would rekindle a time when he used to fly rc. Well he never did take it up again. As for me this was the little bird I aspired to fly one day.Ironically I put off learning to fly for years because I could not bear to fly an unsightly trainer.Long story short, I now fly 3D with many types of aircraft which are much more capable and more complex than this plane. This poor little mustang has waited patiently for almost 18 years. She has had many differant colour schemes and mods from damage due to the years of hanging in garages and locked in closets.I finally brought her into the light and dusted her off once and for all. This past week I scraped her down and gave her a paint job I hope she will be proud to fly. Her maiden will probably be in a week or two.No more putting it off. She will get her deserved time in the air. This plane has had a very sentimental journey. Wish her the best!

PS When I originally built her I knew nothing of RC planes. I used alot of products which weren't compatible with one another. Many paint jobs were destroyed within months of completion due to differant shrink rates of paint such as Butyrate dope. Never Again!!!!

In a previous time I spent some years as a Fiberglass finisher and painter in the yacht building industry. This plane benitfited from that experience. Weight gain is negligeable . Wing loading will be up I'm sure . She will probably land hot, but I got to see this thing in the air once and for all. Even now after all of this latest paint is complete, Past fillers are rearing their ugly heads in the forms of bubbles. Thank god for strategically placed decals.( My vinyl cutter loves me)

One thing I can say for sure. I have built many planes from scratch but I am sure thankful for the quality ARF's that are now being produced. Even the assembly of those can wear thin on a perfectionist.
