Default Slimline Smoke Muffler Troubleshooting

I need a hand with troubleshooting a Slimline pitts smoke muffler on a DA50. THe smoke pump delivers fluid but doesnt smoke when the engine is running.
I tried blowing through the muffler and there seems to be a restiction.
The brass insert in the side what does this do? I took it out and it looks like a screw thread for preheating? Where does the oil go after this brass piece?
What is after the brass insert inside the muffler?
Does the insert need to be oriented a certain way?
