Default Buying a Sim - Help a brotha out!

Hey everyone,

Well I've decided to buy a Sim and need to decide on which one. I have a "borrowed" copy of AFPD and its great but I dont have the Tx adapter for it. I've been using a Logitech dual stick with some mods for 6 months now and I really do love that sim, it taught me how to fly. Ive heard from a few people that Reflex XTR is the tops at the moment but dont know anyone personally that has tried it.

I was wondering if I could get some feedback from some of the current sims with patches that everyone has used. If you've tried multiple sims then if you could tell me which one you liked better that'd be great. I'm thinking of just ordering AFPD because at least I'll know what to expect, but I know if I do then someone will say "YOU DUMB A$$! You should have got such or such".

I dont fly Helis and I use mine for mostly practicing 3D type stuff. I'll need the typical 3D planes in the sim.

Thanks in advance...

Bob

I like AFPD and Real flight G3 AFPD i l;ike the most but i would be happy with either one of these.

i really hated the xtr, it was pretty but the flight characteristics were terrible.

I also didnt care much for the fsone but i have only flown that one in the store display.

I currently own Real Flight G2, Real Flight 3.5 and FS One, and have flown AFPB. Personally I like the 3.5 the best of what I currently own. The FS One has sweet graphics and realism, I just can't get past the extremely long time it takes to load a page, even if it's just loading the switching of a model.

Flown XTR AFPD and G3.5

XTR is the worst for 3D as far as flight charactersitcis go, AFPD and G3.5 are around the same kind of "difficulty" if you will. AFPD probably is a bit more reaslistic when it comes to harriers etc for me though

I've flown them all and prefer AFPD. All you have to do is take a cheap 4 channel tx and pull the crystal. The battery will last forever. I just keep that tx sittting on top of the pc and it's there for use anytime I want. The sim is the best thing you can do for the hobby IMO. Totally took me to a higher level of flying without looking bad at the field (and crashing planes).

Just get AFPD and be done with it. There is so many downloads for it. like T-rex 450 and 600, Raptor 90 etc... You name it AFPD got it.

Cool guys thanks a ton. Yeah I find that AFPD is really close as far as 3D goes as well. If you use the photo realistic sceneries it looks amazingly real also. Two of you have used Reflex XTR and didnt like the physics for 3D, which goes against what I read by two other people. I didnt read it on this site though so I'm going to go with what Fly-Guy and Flatlandman said.

Ok well I'm off to find a copy of AFPD somewhere in Canada hopefully. I cant wait to be able to actually use a real Tx to fly with! Heres a picture of what I've been using for the last 6 months. Hilarious! Worked really good though, just no racheting throttle.

Thanks again everyone... Peace.

I have flown all the major flight sims, and for planes AFPD rules. Looks like the AFPD developers are keen on creating some US photorealistic sceneries http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5672013/tm.htm

I have G3.5 and have flown AFPD. They both fly really well. The real gotcha is the lack of community support for G3.5. Most of the free models and airports out there are for AFPD. G3.5 is getting less buggy all the time but there are still issues and every time they do a new release its a crap shoot.

I got sold on G3 by the hobby shop, they claimed the controller was better. Well the aileron stick on mine lost tension after a couple of months. Apparently its a "known issue" there is a weak part in the plastic mold. They (Knife Edge) are not doing anything about it. I fixed it myself.

Finally I'm at a point where I want to be able to record my flights and look at my flight path for IMAC training. AFPD has much better support for this, G3.5 just doesn't.

If I had it to do all over again I would Get AFPD.

Hey everyone,

I recieved my new AFPD last week and it is SOOO nice to be flying with my actual Tx. There are a few new planes with this version too that I didnt have with my last. I'm really glad I went with AFPD, thanks for the input everyone. I wish I could find a Airfoilz Yak and a Stevens Aero Edge to fly for it. Maybe someone knows of a place? Anyway, back to finishing up my Mini Flash Peace.

There is an Airfoilz Yak under Motor Models. You have to sign up but it's free.
