Hello,
I just got an Axe CP and i already tire of its puny battery perfomance. so i want to move to lipo setup. it says in the manual that they recommend a 11.1 910mah lipo battery. I have found a few batteries that have higher mah and im wondering if they are compatible. whats the rule when considering mah tolerences. and does mah refer more to duration of flight or does it relate to power? reason i ask is because in weight the 2000 mah lipo i found weighs less than the the 650 mah nimh pack that ships with the axe cp. thanks in advace! |

It's about weight. Larger capacity means larger cells and more weight in lipos. Don't bother comaring them to NiMH.

thanks. but i guess what im concerned with is overloading the esc with too powerful of a battery. sorry if i didnt clarify that.

That is more a function of your motor than your battery.

ok so would a 2000 mah battery be safe? it uses a 380 motor.

Yeah, but it would be so heavy, that motor would struggle in an upline, depending on the weight of the plane. ...oh and you would want a 20 amp brushless ESC, although you could get by with a 10 amp most likely, (I have).
Some battery brands are lighter than others, so a 2000 MaH 11.1 V 3 cell lipo from say, Thunder Power will likely be lighter than a similar pack from another cheaper brand name distributor. It also depends on the type of plane and the type of flying you intend to do with it. I don't know what an Axe CP is.

It's official, thanks Verne...

The voltage is what you need to worry about, if they say you can use an 11.1V pack with your current motor and ESC than you're good to go with any battery you chose with 11.1V. The only thing that a larger mAh pack gives you is longer flight times. |

rad. thats the answer i was looking for.. i saw a couple 1300mah packs that weigh half of what the nimh weighs.. that would probably be ideal.

Cutting the weight is the same as increasing the power. Bumping to 11.1v is like adding horsepower because of the probable increase in voltage over your nimh batteries. Bumping the milliamps is like having a bigger tank of gas than the one you had.

In addition to what Boulder and Silversurfer mentioned, with lipos you get an exceptional rate of discharge. Most are rated at least 20C which means for a 1000 MaH pack, you can get a burst of 20 AMPS!! This is the real reason lipos work so well with brushless motors in creating RPM.
once you go with Lipos, you will never use NiMH or NiCD for electrics again.
