The Venom heat gage is a small unit with an LED readout that has a loop with a thermocouple in it. You run the loop around the base of your cylinder and it gives you the highest temperature reached during the flight.

I use the Venom gauge as well, tied to the cylinder back wall just beneath the uppermost cooling fin. As supplied, it does have very short leads and battery life though.
Some extra information:
The sensor is a glass bead NTC resistor, so the leads can be lengthened. The tiny battery inside can be replaced by a single NiMH cell on long leads as well. Currently I run a test. The Venom has been operating for 35 days now on a single 2500 mAh cell with the charge still going strong, leads to the battery are about 15" long.

DLe-55, J-Tec pitts muffler.
Biela 22X8 ~7300Rpm
Mejzlik 23X8 ~7100 Rpm
~20mtrs above sea level, 3 gallons through.

The most interesting in this thread is that many people with stock muffler has 10-20% or even more power as listed in specifications .

You can try this prop calc http://mvvs.nl/prop-power-calculator.xls
