Default sometimes its better to be lucky...

Today, flying the new Raptor 50, and I got SOOOOO lucky ! I was just getting ready to check pitch in negative, and start doing some light 3D with it, and all the sudden the tail blows out in a backwards upright, but it catches when it goes into the wind. This is strange to me as I have a 611 on it, and it hasnt done this in 6 flights. Then all of the sudden it piro's to the left uber fast.... IM like *** ? I hit the throttle hold and got it down in one piece. I can only imagine if I was hitting it hard in 3D and this happened. Turns out the screw on the 9256 backed out as I must have not tightned it down, or didnt use loctite... I think both are the culprit there. So I got away unscathed on that one, with the exception of a broken tail blade, and a dinged boom Its in one piece WHHOOPPIEEEE !!!

LUCKY !

this was the 6th flight on it

Thats great! I have been flying gas for a while but want to get a raptor 50 or some other 50 size heli. How much is a raptor with a OS 50 hyper that is decked out with some nice servo's and a sweet gyro.

I like luck, I just had a flame out on my night ship in the middle of doing tic-tocs and managed to get it upright, and autoed safely to the ground that I could not see and only 5 feet from the river, with a 10lb Raptor 50.

Hey Toro, you mentioned that you might not have put loctite on what came loose, are you in a habit of putting loctite on your bolts and aircraft nuts even though those type of nuts arent supposed to come loose ? Even though I dont fly helis much, when I built mine my buddy told me to loctite every bolt in it cause of vibration and stuff. Just wondering what others do.

I did the same thing Toro did. Us heli guys are not used to metal geared servos and I also forgot to loctite mine. Everything else is loctited or ca'ed.

You do not want to put loctite on a nylon insert lock nut, any other metal to metal thread gets loctite.
DO NOT use loctite or CA on plastic.
Loctite and CA will crystallize the plastic greatly weakening it.
If you feel better about putting something on screws that are going into plastic, Use Loctite #425 that is made specifically for locking plastic threads.

You also can not reuse nylon lock nuts more than once or the locking ability is drastically reduced. I have seen many cases where the lock nut had been used so many times that it was able to be put on with bare fingers.
