I built one a while ago and was able to get it down to 21 1/2 pounds with a 3W 70 twin. It is a really nice flying airplane if done right. This would be an animal with a soon to be released DA 85. If you decide to get the kit I will do a complete write up on what exactly I did as it will be quite lengthy.

Thanks Shawn,
I like the way you think! This build would probably really get going late this fall as there is too much flying to do when the weather is nice. With that said, I was thinking about the new DA. Any Idea when it's supposed to come out? When I do get the kit, any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty sure I want to fully sheet the wing with 1/16th contest grade, replace abs with fiberglass, aluminum with carbon fiber etc.. try to get it as light as possible without comprimising tha airframes integrity. |

Sheeting the foam with 1/16 AAA is a good start, I did extensive fuse mods to get weight out. I used the ABS parts as molds and did my own CF reinforced fiberglass parts. At the time CF gear and tubes were not available so with the mods and more CF parts along with the DA you may get down to 20 lbs.

GremlinX,
Not sure if you were talking to Shawn or me. When I get the kit, I'll probably start a build thread and keep everyone posted. |
