Yeah I am still heavily leaning towards getting one of these hyper OS motors straight up. Its like an extra 160 bucks but would probably be worth it I think if my fixed wing experience is anything to go by.

Benny,
Dennis and the guys down there at the central coast field should be able to sort you out no worries. There a good bunch of guys, know there stuff and are willing to help out newcomers. Good luck with it all and if your ever up in Newcastle us heli guys at the rebel club are there on saturday mornings. Feel free to come up for a fly any saturday morning or if you need help with anything.

Trent

I had a TT50 in my first raptor and then later changed to an OS50 and then finally onto the new hyper. Typically the TT50 has less power but is better on fuel economy. These days most people run either the OS50 SXH or the OS50 SXH hyper. I think powergrunt has the hyper for about $280 which is a really good price. It doesnt really mater that much which one you get from the start, but as you said OS make quality engines and i would much rather an OS over the thunder tiger any day. You can always start with the TT as they are cheap as chips when you get it with a heli kit and then change to a hyper once youve mastered the heli and are into the 3D flying.

Hey thats cool Mat, I owe you one as well. DId you know that the DVD never showed up in the post. Must have been stolen by one of the posties!!

Trent, if you ever want to come and check out my Yak at Maitland feel free to make a visit. I am afraid I would get in the poo for flying it at your rebel club as I am far to loud!!

At the moment I have a Mojo 40 on the building table, I need to shift something to get myself the helicopter. I am only allowed so many models at any one time!!

A cheaper motor might be okay to start with. They are kind of easy to fry when starting out - it isn't like tuning the needles on a plane. You just can't wind up the chopper & tweak the needles. The safest bet is to start with it really rich & slowly lean it until you get acceptable power. A finger on the backplate after it has been running is a good way to see if it's okay. If you can leave your finger on the backplate for 5 seconds or better without burning it, you should be running it rich enough. OS motors are great. I tried Webra motors for awhile, but had trouble keeping them cool. I picked up an OS 50 and have loved it - easy to keep rich while still making great power.

No need to go with the hyper, I'm running a normal .50sxh in my Evo and am plenty happy with the power. You can always upgrade the motor later on by adding the hyper carb and head.

As for going with a .50SE for a first heli, that's absolutley not needed. Alot more intial layout and parts cost more when you crash it.

Go with a Raptor .50 and the OS .50 sxh with a good pipe and you'll be happy.

I still stand by what I said about the Evo though, you can't go wrong with that heli either.

Figure out if you want to fly gas or electric. I prefer gas. Go to the local club see whos flying what. If its like what i've been around everyone pretty much will have the same helicopters. Where i fly its raptors. Get what other people near you have that way they can teach you some tricks on what to do and youll end up making some cool friends that way too!
