Default Guys with Wife's and Kids... - Hobby Time?

Hey fellas,

So all you guys with Wives and Kids,
what do you average in hobby-time a week?

During Flying season how often do you fly, and how much flying time each flying day do you log.

I'm trying to gather some good ammo for an upcomming "Discussion"
I'm going to have.

I average 1.5 - 2 hours a night of build time (but this is at 10:30 - 12:30 after everone is sleep)

and during flying season, I fly on sundays from 8am till around 2:30pm... and maybe 1 flyin a month ,,,,

Problem for me is wife has NO interest in planes, or comming to the field at all, she hates it.
Thinks its the buggest waste of time ever created....

Guys give me data!!!

My wife has no interest in it either nor do my daughters but they all know how much I love it.
I am lucky enough to work at a job that affords me a lot of time at home and a lot of time for the hobby.

My wife never complains about me flying or leaving for a few days to go to a contest. She is the best!

I am very lucky.

Hey SleepyC,
I get an average of 10 hours a week of build time and maybe 1 weekend day for flying usually about 3-5 hours. Although my wife has no interst in planes Im greatful she doesnt complain to much.... My wife does bring my 1 1/2 year son to the field a few times in the summer. Since I fly alot of foamies, when its warm I go to the local Ball fields and fly in the evenings(summer time) whenever I have time. So to sum it up, I wish I could fly and build 24/7 but the reality for most married fathers is probably to come up short of what they would really like to invest in the hobby. Also, I do a alot of hucking in the basement!!!!Videos coming soon.... Hope this Helps, John C.

My family used to go with me for about the first 6 months, then they lost interest,

I get in trouble just for being on here at night when I am home and as far as building time, I get none... I can barely maintain the planes I do have.

There has been very little support and she doesn't understand that If I want to go flying Sat or Sunday the night before I have to work on my planes to get them ready or else flying won't happen.

It has gotten even more difficult with the 2nd kid now and almost impossible to even go flying once a month, That is why I am always on the verge of giving up and selling out. Some months are better than others, If I don't get some more flights on my 1 year old 35% Edge (With 2 Flights) it will be gone this summer, I can't stand it just sitting idle in my garage and not getting flown.

Good Luck with your discussion, most of you guys are already in a better position than I am...

Actual build time.....maybe 1 hour a night, after everyone is in bed. Otherwise I've got a set of hands that's 1 1/2 years old trying to help me assemble my Yak. Flying time, last season when it was just 2 kids, I averaged Sat and Sun from 8 till 12. It's usually too damn hot by then, the sun is coming around in your eyes, and I'm ready to go home anyway. Fly-ins.....not very often. I'm not sure how much time I'll get since the 3rd kid has arrived. We'll see.

my wife and I have gone to couseling over this one. Our couseler was great and basically helped her understand that I need my time, I ask my wife if there is something that she needs before I spend alot of time out in the garage. I put in about 2-4 hours a day wether it be building, flying foamies, sim or giant. I abolutely love this sport but I love my wife and kids more. Family first, fulfill her needs and she will fulfill yours and not just rc time.

Ok... I'm right in there with most of you.

Building after everyone is sleeping, Big Dawg flying once a week or less...

I feel better. I only go to the BIG Flyin's I can plan for WAAAAYYYY ahead of time, and usually get my parents to baby sit one kid so that the wife can relax a bit as well..

Its a fine balance to do this hobby and have a "young" family.

I'm hopeing that my daughter will want to go with a little this year (she'll be 4 this summer and loves my planes in my workshop)

This is good.... I now see that I'm not pushing the limits too much by going to the field once a week (during the summer)....

I think the problem is the wife has no hobbies or passions so its hard to explain my obsession to her..

Ohhhh welllll Life ain't easy or else every one would have one!!

i think Women are missing the "H" Chromosome.

The HOBBY GENE.

The Genetic BALSA Gland.

The OCABC (obsessive compulsive airplane buying condition)

3 hours 4 nights a week. All night and day on the weekend.

During the flying season I will fly 4-5 times a week.My kids are pretty much my airplane mechanics (or so they think ) so we spend alot of time working on or playing with my planes.
Compared to the every night drinking and the ex-drug use my wife loves it.Ya it cost just as much but my wife and kids are involved now and it is for the most part good clean fun.

My wife supports my hobby! I get about 3-4 hrs of build time a day 5 days a week and all weekend to build or fly! My daughter is only 22mo and spend most of the time playing with her 5 airplanes . Believe it or not her first real word besides HI was aaaaplane! Got to love it. Now when I come home she says Daddy!!!!! and says fly airplane???????. What a blessing. And Like Big D. said......... No more drugs..... Hell I don't even drink but 1-2 beers every two weeks. Allot better then the alternative..

My build time varies depending on my work load. I work for myself, so depending on the weather is what decides how much time i have due to service calls. (I am a HVAC tech/installer) My son flys with me, (Huckin' it) so having a co-pilot in my opinion really loosens up the amount of time i am "allowed" to spend....lol. Right now my wife works days so as long as the house is straightened up and that stuff(you know the drill) then i have just about all day, that is untill the kids get home from school, that's when i quit otherwise there are too many distractions. As far as flying time goes... it's about the same deal, after all is tidy in the spring and the kids are off to school, I'm off to the field! However, i did not get in no where near as much flying in as i would have liked this past year due to an early work load that followed with a hot summer of non-stop work. My wife has been great however! She knows how much i love this hobby and both her and i are very greatfull my son and i are able to spend so much time together with a common interest! I plan on building a Carden soon for him, as i am very proud of his acomplishments thus far. My Daughter, also (7) LOVES going to the field with us as well! Just got to stop at MC D's first for her breakfast picnic and she packs up her dolls etc and she is set! I guess i am very fortunate to have a great family. I don't know what i would be doing without this Hobby! It's always there and on my mind..... SICK aint' it? LOL....

Its sounds to me we all have our hearts in the right place, Family first and then the Hobby!!! Sometimes I think I might have a little OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) or just a strong passion for the great things in life!!! Either way what ever it takes to keep the kid inside I hope we can share this joy with our Families!!! Safe Landings to all... Mr. Inverted...

Hey that screwdriver doesn't look that intimidating as all it can do is poke few holes. My son decided to rough sand already monokoted GP Patty Extra with sanding block.

During sping-summer-fall days, we ( me, wife, Justin ) all go out to the field 2-3 times per week in the afternoon for 2-3 hours at a time. During weekends, maybe 3-5 hours sat or sun or sometimes both.

Build time is as much free time I have but little one helps too much so I try to pick when he is sleeping.
